Training and Development - Human Resources

As the Assistant Manager for Training and Development in Human Resources, Bill Verble has many responsibilities, including supervisory duties. In addition to work responsibilities, Bill works one morning each month in his daughter’s preschool class at Fayette Cooperating Nursery School.

Bill says that communication is the key to making a flexible schedule work. “I know six weeks in advance when I will need to be out, and I communicate that with my staff.” When signing up for his parent work duties, Bill looks at his work schedule and selects non-crucial times to be out. “My supervisor, Patrice Carroll, is wonderful about allowing me to spend that time at the school. I come in early or stay late to make up the time.”

Although working with 12-17 preschoolers is very different from the work Bill does in Training and Development, he finds it extremely rewarding. “It is a high-energy morning,” Bill explains.  “It helps me stay involved with my daughter’s school life and allows me to get to know her friends. It also provides the opportunity for contact with other parents.”

Bill says that Training and Development has always been sensitive to the work/life needs of their employees, and he would always work with his staff on work/life balance. “Having the flexibility in my schedule is very important to me, and it definitely makes working at the university more attractive.”
