Flexible Work Arrangement - Kay Gaines
My name is Kay Gaines and I work as a staff assistant at Sanders Brown Center on Aging, Alzheimer’s Disease Center. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Morehead State University in 1980 and never thought much of how I would use it. After I worked the gamut of jobs in long term care for years, I decided to start over. I got a job through the STEPS program here at UK as a staff assistant and took computer desktop training classes through Human Resources and also took the Professional Development classes. I became familiar with the job search engine and transferred to the position I now have at Sanders Brown Center on Aging, Alzheimer’s Disease Center where I have worked for the past five years. I have always known since I was a little girl I would work with the elderly in some way or another. After getting the job here at SBCOA I realized I wanted to do more, so I decided to go back to school and get my Masters Degree in Social Work.

I am fortunate to work in an environment that allows me a flexible schedule to get my degree and also have Friday afternoons off to take care of personal appointments. This is very important to me because I have an elderly mother that I help take care of. It takes a lot of stress off of my work day when I know I can have the scheduled time off to tend to her needs and not worry about my work productivity suffering. |
In the picture with me is my dog, Collin. I call him my service dog because he goes to my elderly mother’s house once or twice a week and spends the day with her while I am at work and then go to school in the evening. He enjoys being with his “granny” and she loves having him over to visit. It makes his life better because he is not home alone and hers better because she is not alone either.
