Work-Life Supervisor of the Year Award

The Work-Life Supervisor of the Year Award is given to one supervisor each year who is highly regarded by his or her employees for consistently supporting the work/life needs of employees.

About the Award

The Supervisor of the Year Award is designed to recognize the following areas of focus for University leaders:
• Enhancement of the quality of Work-Life in ways that make a significant difference in your area;
• Fair and consistent treatment of staff;
• Clear communication of goals and expectations and holds staff accountable
• Practices supportive of work-Life balance
• Empowerment
• Accountability for thoughtful management of University resources

Nomination Process

Faculty and staff may nominate their supervisors. To be eligible, your supervisor needs a minimum of three years of supervisory experience at UK and must have participated in supervisory training.

1) Complete the nomination form online (you may choose to send us a paper form instead). For reference section of the form, please include the names and e-mail addresses of four other employees in your department who would be willing to validate your nomination.

2) Along with your completed nomination form, include a copy of your department’s organizational chart or description, showing the supervisor’s direct or indirect contact with various levels of personnel.

3) In addition to the completed nomination form and organizational chart or description: Please provide a separate document that addresses as many of the following elements as possible, with supporting examples explaining the reasons for your nomination.

A Supervisor of the Year nominee ideally exhibits the following qualities or behaviors:

  • Enhances the quality of Work-Life in the workplace in ways
    that make a significant difference

    Is your supervisor easy to communicate with?
    Is he/she concerned about staff’s overall well-being?
    Does he/she encourage professional growth?
  • Is fair and consistent
    Is your supervisor equitable in his/her treatment of staff?
  • Communicates goals and expectations clearly and holds staff accountable
    Does your supervisor take time to plan and follow-up with projects?
  • Understands and supports Work-Life balance
    Does the nominee:
    Allow flexible schedules?
    Promote/encourage staff to attend seminars, support groups, training?
    Show concern and is proactive when dealing with Work Life issues?
  • Treats all with dignity and respect
    Does your supervisor value input from all department personnel?
  • Empowers everyone
    Does your supervisor value ideas from all department personnel?
    Does he/she encourage teamwork?
  • Is accountable for managing resources for the greatest support of institutional goals
    Does your supervisor demonstrate efficiency in the utilization of resources?
    Does he/she demonstrate an understanding of how your unit’s work contributes the goals of the university?

Nominees are recognized at the Work-Life Supervisor of the Year Award Luncheon in October. Award winners will receive a plaque and will be profiled on the Work-Life web site.
