2010 Work-Life Supervisor of the Year Award

The 2010 Work-Life Supervisor of the Year Luncheon took place on Wedneday, October 27, 2010. Over 80 nominees were recognized at this year's event. This year's winner was David Adams, Cooperative Extension Director, District 1.

David Adams graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1973 with a degree in Agricultural Economics; he returned to UK in 1994 and received a Masters Degree in Agronomy.

His career with the Cooperative Extension began when he was hired as the Perry County Extension Agent. In 1996 he was selected as Area Program Director for the Cooperative Extension Service Administrative Team.

As Director for Extension District 1, he oversees 20 counties in the state. He was characterized by his staff as being someone who:

  • is accessible and prompt in his communication;
  • encourages professional growth;
  • does not practice favoritism;
  • supports work/life balance;
  • upholds accountability for the university’s mission and resources;
  • and above all, ensures that his staff feels valued and respected.
Special Recognitions

There were two Special Recognition Awards given this year.
The two recipients of the award were recognized for their efforts as excellent supervisors and for advancing Work-Life at UK.

Lori Gonzalez
Dean, College of Health Sciences and Chair, Work-Life Advisory Council
As a supervisor, Lori is described as understanding, caring and accessible; a person who genuinely cares about the well-being of her employees while carrying out the institutional expectations and responsibilities.

Jennifer Swanberg
Faculty, College of Social Work and Director, Institute for Workplace Innovation (iWin)

Jennifer understands that everyone has his or her own unique work style and levels of work experiences. She accommodates each work style and works with each employee to develop professional goals.

Patricia Bond

Patricia was nominated by her staff for her understanding of the diversity of attributes and needs among students and staff and for her skilled management style.

Judy Niblett
Ground CDU/ACTU, Patient Care Manager

Judy was nominated by her employees for her long standing service to UK Healthcare, and for being regarded as one of the best nursing supervisors at UK.

Gayle Plank
Nursing, Patient Care Manager

Gayle has managed two wings and 50 employees for over 20 years. Through all the changes in UK Healthcare, she has been described as making every change a positive one.

Barbara Ramlow
Center on Drug and Alcohol Research, Director of Targeted Assessment

Barbara was described as fostering a positive work-life environment by having an open door policy and working with staff to adjust work schedules while ensuring that the department and program needs are met.
