Alternative Transportation Resources for UK Employees

bicycle As gas prices continue to rise, many people are looking for alternatives to their typical daily commutes to work. The Work-Life Office is dedicated to helping you in your search for solutions. Carpooling, biking, and mass transit are some options to consider. In addition to the obvious economic benefits to you, alternative transportation helps the environment and has also been shown to reduce stress levels.

PTS Announces Launch of Car Sharing Program

Don't have a car? Use ours! UK Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) has teamed up with Connect by Hertz car sharing company to offer car sharing to the campus community. This low-cost, short-term car rental option offers an hourly rate for use of a car. The car sharing program requires membership, which will be free for one year under an introductory offer.

The cars used in the program are Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay certified green vehicles, which means they are superior environmental performers relative to other vehicles. SmartWay certification means a car has scored a 6 or above on the EPA's air pollution and greenhouse gas scales of 1-10.

Car sharing is a great option for those who don't have cars on campus, those who regularly use alternative transportation, and those who want to avoid wear and tear on their vehicle. Sign up today! Visit Car Sharing Information to learn more.

Bringing your bicycle to campus?

In an effort to provide the campus community with a safe, secure, and efficient cycling environment, the University requires bicyclists to observe established regulations for operating and parking bicycles and campus and strongly encourages cyclists to obtain and display a bicycle permit, available at no charge. Visit www.uky.edu/pts for more information..

The free bicycle registration program will help:

  • Reduce bike thefts and help you recover your bike if it is stolen.
  • Provide valuable data about bike use on campus.
  • Reduce costs to cyclists by allowing PTS to contact owners of improperly parked bikes as an alternative to impoundment.
  • Assist us in getting information out to UK cyclists.

There are several ways to apply for a bicycle permit:
