Resources for Grieving UK Employees, Students, and Families

August 28, 2006 - The following agencies are available to provide grief counseling and related services to UK employees and students in the wake of the flight 5191 tragedy.

This is a free service available to anyone in the community needing grief or bereavement services. Anyone affected by the tragedy is welcome to call and schedule an appointment. Though the center is affiliated with Hospice, you do not have to be a hospice patient or have used hospice to use the services of the Grief & Education Center.

Hours are Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Comprehensive Assessment and Training Services Project (CATS)

This is a University-based program that treats traumatized children and would be available to provide free services to children impacted or distressed by the disaster. They will also provide resources, consultation, and support for mental health providers who are assessing and treating disasters survivors/families.

Callers may request to speak with an on-duty psychologist between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday regarding personal grief or concern regarding a loved one’s response to the recent tragedy. Callers may also inquire regarding any emergency need that may require a walk-in appointment or for grief interventions for a group/class/department, as well as referrals to other services. Students enrolled and paying fees for 6 credit hours at UK are eligible for free direct counseling services at the Counseling and Testing Center, and free phone consultations are available to faculty, staff, students, parents, and other concerned parties.

REFER is a resource and referral service for employees experiencing emotional stress, family and marital problems, substance abuse or medial/legal/financial issues.

Hours are Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Staff is available to respond to employees impacted or distressed by the disaster. Information, consultation, and referrals can be provided to employees.
