UK@Work Survey Results: Top Work-Life Offerings
The UK@Work surveys asked staff and faculty to indicate which current and potential work-life offerings would either be of some or great value. Below, please find highlights of top-ranked work-life initiatives favored by staff and faculty.
Among work-life programs, policies and practices currently already in place, the following were listed by at least 70 percent of staff respondents as “of great value” or “of some value”:
- Flexible work week
- Financial/investment planning seminars
- Health and Wellness programs
- Pre-retirement counseling
- Job posting system for current openings
- Employee Education Program (EEP)
Among potential work initiatives, the top three items selected as most valuable by staff include the following:
- Compressed work week
- College tuition program for employees’ children or dependents
- Telecommuting

Note: There were 432 responses to the open-ended option. The most frequent comment was “expansion of current benefits (e.g., cafeteria style)” followed by “expansion of college tuition program.”
Among work-life programs, policies and practices currently already in place, the following were listed by at least 80 percent of faculty respondents as “of great value” or “of some value”:
- Increased technical staff support
- Resources and technology to work from home office
- Increased administrative staff support
- Greater assistance from chair/director to ensure success of work
Among potential work initiatives, the top three items selected as most valuable by faculty include the following:
- College tuition program for employees’ children, dependents or spouse
- More comprehensive employee assistance program for counseling on personal/family issues
- Note: There were 83 responses to an open-ended option. The most frequent “write in” response recommended “domestic partner benefits,” followed by “expansion of current benefits (e.g., cafeteria style).”
