Change to Benefit Deductions Begins December 2007

UK will soon change the way benefit payments are deducted. Currently, benefit payments are deducted from your monthly or bi-weekly paycheck on an advance payment (pre-payment) basis. For example, your benefit deductions in one month pay for coverage for the next month's coverage.

Beginning in January 2008, benefit payments will no longer be deducted one month in advance. Instead, benefit payments will pay for coverage during the current pay period. (Therefore deductions made in January will cover the cost of January's coverage.) This change affects all payroll-deducted payments for health, dental, vision, life and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance coverage. Most employees will not see a deduction for these benefits in December (unless there is a pending adjustment to premiums related to special circumstances), however coverage will remain in place.

We are eliminating the pre-payment system to prepare for online benefits enrollment, which is expected in early 2008. New employees will no longer have to pay for two months of benefits at the start of UK employment. If an employee severs employment with the University, coverage typically extends to the end of the same month the employee terminates.
