Federal Work Study Students and Background Checks

Federal Work Study students complete an I-9 Employment Eligibility Form and have payroll taxes deducted from their payroll checks, and so initial hires into this program are required to complete a Pre-employment National Background Check (PNBC).

If your department is on-campus and employs a work study student in his or her first instance of employment with UK (or if the student has been employed by the University within the past 12 months), your department will be required to initiate the background check as well as absorb the cost.

It is appropriate to use the Direct User feature in the Online Employment System to hire Federal Work Study students.

Questions regarding this e-mail or general questions regarding the PNBC Process can be directed to Jon Gent at 257-2608 or Jon.Gent@uky.edu

Questions regarding the Federal Work Study program can be directed at Rhonda Byrant in the Student Financial Office at 257-3172 extension 231, or at rbryant@email.uky.edu.
