Student Employment

Job Seekers' FAQ

What is Student Employment?

A University Referral Service which assists students in securing flexible employment while attending the University. Online job posting lists part-time student jobs in a variety of areas on- & off-campus.

How can I find part-time employment on and off campus?

First go to www.uky.edu/hr/studentjobs

Then read the column about “Student Employment in 4 steps”.  This will tell you step by step instructions on creating your student application and searching for jobs available.

Some of the positions listed expire soon, should I apply anyway?

The date we list is arbitrary.  We give each posting a set amount of time so that we can review the posting after a given amount of time to keep it updated.

What time can I have a referral/ screening interview?
Stop in Monday-Friday between the hours of 12:30-4pm.  NO appointment is necessary. If your schedule does not allow for you to stop in during these times, please call us at 859-257-9542 to schedule another time that is more convenient.

Do I need to dress professionally for the referral/ screening interview at Scovell Hall?

NO.  Please feel free to stop in between classes.  Normal student attire is fine for the visit.

Who can use this referral service?

Only current University Of Kentucky students may use our services.

What is a referral/ screening interview?

A referral/ screening means Student Employment assistants will put you in contact, refer, you to an employer. It will last about 5-10 minutes and we will go over contact information and ensure you will be a great fit for the position(s) in which you applied.

What should I bring to the referral/ screening interview?

In order to be seen by our office, just bring your current student ID, UK acceptance letter, or current semester schedule.

I am an international student with an F-1 Visa, can I apply to off-campus positions?

NO. First talk with your advisor regarding your visa status and your specific allowances. Most of the time, international students must work on-campus and no more than 20 hours total per week during the semester.

What if my status says “In pool” when I log into my account?

“In pool” status means that a specific on-campus department posted the position directly and they are collecting applications for further review.  IF the department is interested in your application and resume that you submit, then the department will contact you by email or phone.  There is no way to contact this department or know what department it is until they contact you.

My status says “Visit Scovell Hall”, what does that mean?

If your status says “Visit Scovell Hall” when you log into your account, then you must stop in our office for a referral interview.  First stop in at the front desk and check-in.  Then, we will bring you into our office and talk to you about the positions you applied to and refer you to the employer if you meet the specifications given by the employer.

Will the job position posted work around my class schedule?

Most of the time employers that post job positions with us realize that you are a college student with a hectic schedule so they can be flexible.  Be sure to read the entire posting to see what hours the employer is seeking.

I don’t know how to write a cover letter or resume, where can I go to get assistance?

For assistance with a resume or cover letter, visit www.uky.edu/careercenter or call 859-257-2746, this will direct you to the Stuckert Career Center on Rose Street.

Where can I find jobs related to the medical field, such as jobs in the UK hospital or Kentucky Clinic?

All University jobs are posted on the same online employment system.  Therefore, depending on what positions are currently available, and how you utilize the search box, will determine what jobs you will see.

Do I need to let Student Employment know that I have been hired?
Yes. In order to keep our services free to students and employers, we need to know what position the student was hired for, the salary/wage, name of student, and date of hire.

I can’t remember my username or password, what do I do?

Please call 859-257-9542 if you are unable to log-in after using the system password reset.

What do I need to bring in to fill out my I-9?
