Thrive - News for UK Staff & Faculty  |  No. 38October 2012
Dear Colleague,

This month, UK's celebration of National Work & Family Month is well underway. Hundreds of our colleagues have already attended special events just for UK staff and faculty. You still have a chance to check out one of several inspiring events, including upcoming "Inner Life of Optimists" presentation on October 24, which features Suzanne Segerstrom of UK's Department of Psychology (see below).

A quick note on professional development for our UK nursing colleagues: If you're in the nursing field at UK and seeking to advance your career, I encourage you to stop by the Nursing Education Career Fair event on October 22.

These and other offerings highlighted below remind us that for UK staff and faculty, career opportunities - and opportunities to learn - abound. I hope you'll join us.

Until next month,

The UK Health & Wellness Program, in partnership with the Lexington Farmers Market, was pleased to bring you the first-ever Lexington Farmers Market @ UK this past summer! To help us in our planning, the UK Health & Wellness Program would like your feedback about the market, whether you attended it or not. Please complete the survey by Nov. 2.

Take Control of Your Health with the Chronic Disease Self Management Program

CDSM (Chronic Disease Self Management Program) is free workshop taught once a week for 2.5 hours for 6 consecutive weeks starting Monday October 29th. Because people with different chronic health conditions attend class together, it encourages a team approach to learning how to deal with symptoms of chronic disease. If you are living with a chronic condition, this workshop can help you better manage your illness. What would we consider a chronic disease? Here are a few examples:

  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Osteoporosis
  • COPD
  • Migraines
  • Emphysema

If you suffer from one of these - or another condition - this course will help you learn better ways of managing symptoms, setting goals, and working with your doctor. This program will help you make better choices for better health. For more information contact Terri Weber, UK Elder Care,

at 859-218-0457.
