EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT HTML5

It's no longer on the horizon, it's here! HMTL 5.0 can now play a bigger role in your websites.

Ernest Delgado has made a slideshow of all the new features in HTML5 (and, playing fast and loose with nomenclature, he takes that term to include CSS 3 and the new JavaScript API features). And boy, if this doesn't’t get you fired up about the future of the Web, nothing will. The slideshow itself is a web page built with all the technologies it’s discussing, allowing examples to be embedded right in the slides. Some of the examples won’t work unless you enable some experimental features, as Ernest explains in the slideshow’s disclaimer.

A MINIMAL HTML5 DOCUMENT

Because all browsers (even old ones like IE6) fully support the shortcuts that are being standardized in HTML5, we can use them today; this is despite most new features of HTML5 remaining off-limits until the browsers catch up.

The HTML5 working group has put a lot of thought into slimming down that minimal set of tags. It turns out all major browsers agree on several shortcuts that can cut down on the code, and the HTML5 specification now allows for these shortcuts to be used in valid code.

With those shortcuts in play, here’s the very minimum that an HTML document should now contain:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>title</title>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="style.css">
<script src="script.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
<!-- page content -->
</body>
</html>

DOES SHAREPOINT DESTROY INTRANET DESIGN?

SharePoint was introduced to UK collaborators several years ago and to UK Web Publishers a few years back. During this time the collaborators use has soared as they've discovered the jewel that is SharePoint when it comes to sharing workflow and project updates. Web publishers, however, have not embraced SharePoint's powerful features because of the steep learning curve.

In his June 7, 2010 Alertbox, Jakob Nielsen points to the strengths of SharePoint for building Intranet sites for various functions.

UK Pharmacy's Karl Lawrence and Diagnostic Radiology's Cynthia Mullins can provide first-hand experience for those interested in getting started.
