Usually, at home basketball games, a poster is distributed that helps fans cheer on the Wildcats every time
we ring up a "3."
At our last regular season home game this year, I decided to give fans something else to cheer about - a
different kind of Fab Five than the one you may be used to hearing about at UK.
We created a poster for these academic Fab Five - students, teachers and researchers who are making a name
for themselves and UK among the elite of higher education, alongside Duke, Harvard, Stanford and other top
academic institutions. These students and teachers are not only competing, they are leading in their respective
fields and areas of study. They are emblematic of the progress we've made in recent years - with your help and
leadership - toward becoming one of the top research institutions in America.
The University of Kentucky's academic Fab Five are (clockwise, from top right):
Dr. David Moliterno serves as the national principal investigator for a landmark $38 million trial to
advance the field of interventional cardiology with angioplasty and stent placement.
Dr. Subodh Das positions UK alongside prestigious schools like MIT and Harvard as a grant recipient for a
UK Sloan Industry Center for sustainable aluminum industry research.
Stephanie Logsdon is a Beckman Foundation Scholarship winner, sharing this prestigious academic accolade
with students from Duke, UCLA and Boston College.
Dr. John Connolly was chosen by the National Science Foundation to lead a $3 million project to improve
computation research in chemistry.
Conley Chaney helped UK join Harvard, Stanford, and UNC-Chapel Hill in being recognized as a Truman
Foundation Honor Institution.
Of course, our academic Fab Five represents only a small number of the students, faculty and research
breaking new ground and leading Kentucky's flagship university forward. However, by shining a spotlight on
some of our best and brightest, I hope to communicate to the world the progress we're making in ensuring a
brighter future for our children and our Commonwealth.
