Applying to the UK Honors Program was probably one of the best decisions I made regarding my college career. It has given me so much opportunity to grow and be challenged, and I've only just completed my freshman year. I can't wait to see what else is in store for me as an upperclassman!"

The professors in the UK Honors Program are incredible. . . . They are not there simply to fill your brain with facts, but to teach you to become a lifelong learner: to ask the right questions—to even have the fortitude to question!—and to seek out the answers."

Biology Major

My best friends at UK lived in the Honors dorm with me, and I could never replace the memories of late-night conversations with them in Patterson lobby, of guerilla knitting the freezing statue of Patterson in the middle of winter, or of playing Scrabble games with them at Common Grounds. Practically, they have also become my study group mates, my lab partners, and my fellow leaders in student organizations."

The Honors Program at UK has provided me with the opportunity to build meaningful realtionships with my peers as well as my professors in a classroom environment. I will always cherish the small class discussions that have allowed me to learn to defend my positions on issues and accept the different opinions and beliefs of others. The honors program has helped me approach the world with an open mind!"

The Honors Program hosts a variety of special events each year. The summer before freshman year, I would recommend attending the summer luau. . . . This event is a great way to meet other honors students and get a taste of college before the fall semester begins."

I would have never imagined that I would spend more than an hour with a professor in his or her office hours, but my Honors professor took the time to go through and explain to me everything I needed to know and helped me figure out how to execute this different writing style. . .for the Honors Program, there is always a welcoming atmosphere and a sense that the professor really wants to get to know you and cares about you."
Darlene Kipphutt

The Honors Program allows students an outlet for their ideas. In such small class settings, professors encourage individual student enthusiasm and creativity. This promotes confidence in ways that are seldom found elsewhere on campus."

The Honors Program deepens the educational journey that awaits students at UK. While studying with the best and brightest students, students broaden both their understanding of the world and how they come to understand it."
Mallory Megee

Being a member of the Honors community allows students to room in the Honors dorm, which is on North Campus. Because all of us are together, it is extremely easy to form study groups, walk to UK basketball games together, or simply go to Blazer and chow down with friends."
Jenna Parrett

Each class challenged me to think beyond the small bubble I live in, encouraging each student to take a different perspective when analyzing new situations or concepts. Honors classes create well-rounded, thoughtful students who are aware and interested in the world around them."
Stephen Polley

The Honors Program hosts many events that allow for new friendships to be made. Events such as the Luau, Mentor programs, Kentucky Honors Roundtable, and movie nights create a safe, comfortable environment where friendships can be fostered."

It was through the Honors Program Journal Journey Project that I was able to obtain a grant to travel to Spain this summer. As my personal experiences show, Honors is far more than a simple program. It is an excellent starting point for talented students to take advantage of all that UK has to offer."
Meaghan Rymer
Class of 2010
Spanish Major
Hometown: Nashville, TN
Having an Honors advisor outside of my major helped me enormously. . . . Often at universities, it is easy to be overwhelmed and difficult to decide the correct advisor, coordinator, or teacher to contact when you have a problem. In the Honors Program, you merely need to head to the eleventh floor of Patterson Office Tower, and they can usually point you in the right direction."
Stacie Schultz
Class of 2011

The Honors Program attracts motivated, sociable, and enjoyable individuals that are welcoming and helpful. Students get to know each other during class, through discussion, and hence find it easier to transfer those bonds to outside of class activities."
