Wireless Access

UK Campus Housing strives to provide effective living and learning environments on the University of Kentucky campus. As part of this goal, UK Campus Housing has partnered with UK Information Technology (UKIT) and Insight Communications to bring high-speed Internet connections to all Campus Housing facilities, adding wireless access to most rooms for the Fall 2010 semester.

During the Spring 2012 semester, Insight Communications partnered with expert consultants to perform a comprehensive study of the Wi-Fi environment in Campus Housing facilities with cable modems in an attempt to identify options to enhance the wireless experience in these buildings. The results of the study indicated that several things common to residential areas were present in UK Campus Housing that could create interference and affect performance of the ResNet wireless network such as other wireless access points, microwaves, Xbox controllers, and cordless telephones.

During the summer of 2012, UK Campus Housing worked with UKIT to install UK campus wireless access building-wide in 6 buildings: Baldwin, Ingels, Keeneland, Patterson, Roselle, and Smith. Residents of these buildings should be able to connect to the ukyedu wireless network throughout the building, including inside student rooms starting in the Fall 2012 semester. Cable modems (Keeneland and Patterson) and Ethernet ports (Baldwin, Ingels, Roselle, and Smith) will still be available for those that prefer to use a wired connection. In addition, UK Campus Housing is working to ensure that wireless access is available in all new halls constructed on campus.

For other halls with cable modems, it is recommended that you plug directly into the cable modem with an Ethernet cable (Cat 5 or Cat 6 patch cable) if you experience problems connecting via the wireless in your residence hall room or apartment. A limited number of Ethernet cables are available to borrow from the ResNet office, or they may be purchased from the ResNet office or University Bookstore. If you continue to experience problems while connected directly with a cable, please contact the ResNet office for support at 859-323-4948 (press 2) or fill out an online appointment request at http://www.uky.edu/Housing/resnet/appointment.html.

Network Registration

NOTE: All Campus Housing residents will be required to register their connections once per year.

The first time you attempt to access the ResNet network (and once per year thereafter), you will be asked to register your connection using your Link Blue user ID and password.

You can find your account information within the contents of your confirmation letter (mailed to you by UK's Office of the Registrar) or on the last page of your Student Profile printout (given to you during your student orientation session). If you have any additional questions about your Link Blue account, please contact the IT Customer Service Center at 218-HELP (4357) or see these instructions for activating your Link Blue account. BCTC students should call the ResNet office at 323-4948 (press 2) to receive more information about their Link Blue account.

If you have any questions about registration please contact the ResNet Help Desk at 323-4948 (press 2). For information regarding registering a device that is unable to use the automated registration process, click here.

Game Console Registration

Just like your computer, your game console must be registered before you can connect it to the ResNet network. Game consoles can be registered at http://nor.net.uky.edu by filling in the optional Device Type and MAC address fields near the middle of the page. For additional information regarding game console registration, please visit www.uky.edu/housing/resnet/register.html.

Personal Computing Responsibilities

All users connected to the ResNet network should review the Personal Computing Responsibilities article and the Keeping Your Personal Computer Secure article.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your computer is secure and that you follow all policies and guidelines established by UK Information Technology.
