Before you come to campus, you should...

Find Your link blue Account (formally called U-Connect)

You will need your link blue account in order to connect to the ResNet network. Your link blue account information should have been included in your registration packet. This account will also be used for many other computing needs across campus, including logging-in to lab and library computers.

For help with your link blue account, please contact the IT Custmomer Service Center. BCTC students should call the ResNet office to receive more information about their link blue account.

Make Sure Your Computer Meets Minimum System Requirements

ResNet supports desktop and laptop computers running Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Macintosh OS X. All computers must meet the minimum system requirements of the installed operating system.

All computers must have a 10/100 Ethernet card installed in order to connect to the ResNet network. If your computer does not have an Ethernet card installed, there are three options available to you:

  1. You may choose to install your card yourself (or have a friend or family member install it for you) using the instructions provided by the card manufacturer.
  2. You may choose to have your card installed by a local computer store or vendor.
  3. If you are unable to have your Ethernet card installed before you get to campus, you may choose to have a ResNet Consultant install the card for you. However, there is a $25.00 fee for this service, payable only via your Plus-Account (installation for notebook computers is free of charge).

In addition to these requirements, you will need a Category 5 (or 6) Patch cable. It is also recommended that you bring your Operating System CD and Ethernet card drivers with you to campus, as these items may be necessary if you need assistance from a ResNet Conultant or if you need to restore your system.

Agree to UK Policies

All persons using the ResNet Network provided by UK Campus Housing must follow the guidelines outlined in the Policy Governing Access to and use of University of Kentucky Computing Resources.

Protect Your Computer

Securing your computer and protecting it from viruses is not only a good idea, it is also a component of prudent and responsible use as described in the Policy Governing Access to and use of University of Kentucky Computing Resources. For more information about securing your computer, see the Keeping Your Personal Computer Secure document provided by the IT Customer Service Center.

When you arrive on campus, you should...

Check Your ResNet Equipment

All residence halls have an Internet connection and most halls connect via cable modems. These cable modems are provided by UK Campus Housing and are in the rooms at move-in. This equipment will be inventoried by a ResNet Consultant prior to your arrival. Please make sure that all of your equipment is in place and noted correctly on your Room Condition Report. You are responsible for your equipment! If something is missing when you move in, please contact your RA immediately.

Get Connected

The Install-a-thon is the fastest way for residence hall students to get help connecting to ResNet. ResNet Consultants will be stationed at different locations throughout campus during the first two weeks of school; look for the posters in your residence hall lobby or on our Announcements page at the beginning of each semester for the dates and times that ResNet will be in your area.

Register Your Computer

In order to connect to the Internet through the ResNet network, you will need to register your computer. You will be asked to register once per semester and any time you get a new computer (or a new Ethernet card).

In most cases, you will be redirected to the registration page when you attempt to connect to the Internet with a computer that has not been registered. If you are not taken to the registration page automatically, you can go to https://nor.net.uky.edu from the computer that you wish to register.

In order to register, you will need to know your link blue account information (formally known as U-Connect). For help with your link blue account, please contact the IT Customer Service Center. BCTC students should call the ResNet office at 323-4948 (press 2) to receive more information about your lnk blue account.
