Instructions to use map

This instrument is GIS-based, using UK EMI data, and was created using Arc-IMS, a very powerful Web-based mapping software. The resulting map graphically represents UK engagement density in Kentucky by county. Users can seek engagement density and information on university-wide outreach and engagement activity or that of any of its colleges/major units in a given county.

When this website first comes up, the map defaults to the full Kentucky outreach and engagement activity of the university ("all colleges"). To shift the representation, click on both the square ("Visible") and the circle ("Active") identifying a college/unit at the right side of the screen. Also, click on the square previously viewed to remove the check mark there. Then, go to the bottom of the right column, and click on "Refresh Map." The depiction of the in-state engagement activity of new college/unit will appear.

Three control buttons on the left hand side of the screen are used for engagement mapping and information.

The button on the left side of the top row toggles between the listing of UK colleges/units and the legend identifying the number of activities associated with each color on the map.

The button on the left side of the seventh row is a lightning bolt. Use it with the map to get a list of UK-wide outreach and engagement or that of any specific college or unit. Once the map is showing, click on the lightning bolt, then click on any county. A listing of UK or specific college/unit outreach and engagement activity comes up. Once the lightning bolt is clicked for UK or a specific college/unit, you can continue clicking on counties and bringing up the engagement activity for each county. You can even change colleges/units and continue clicking on counties to pull up their engagement activity in those counties.

Troubleshoot

If the full listing of projects will not come up on the Kentucky engagement map when you are in Internet Explorer:

Go to "Tools" at the top of the screen or the gear image on the right side of the screen near the top of the screen/just above the website being viewed), then "Pop up blocker," then "Pop up blocker settings," then in the box below "Address of website to allow," type in: uems1/uky.edu. Then click "Add," then "Close."

If the full listing of projects will not come up on the Kentucky engagement map when you are in Mozilla Firefox:

Click on "Tools" (top of screen), then "Options," then "Content," then the "Exceptions" button to the right of "Block pop up windows," then in the box under "Address of Web site" type in: uems1.uky.edu Then click "Allow," then "Close," then "OK."

If you click on a county before clicking on the lightning bolt, it will zoom in on that area of the map. In order to reverse the zoom and return to the full Kentucky map, click on the third row, left hand button.
