Policy on the Release of Email Addresses for Faculty, Staff, and Students

Background

The Nonmedical Institutional Review Board (IRB) met on Friday January 8, 2010 and recommended that the Office of Institutional Research develop a policy whereby they only release emails to faculty and staff if the purpose of the research is in the entire University's interests. The IRB made its decision in the hope of reducing the likelihood that an investigator would obtain access to emails for any type of research, whether there is a compelling institutional interest or not.

Policy Statements

The Office of Institutional Research compiles and releases email addresses of faculty, staff, and students for use in web-based surveys only when the purpose of the research serves the interests of the institution as a whole. The Office may choose to support a research project when it is focused on providing data and information to improve the University's policies and programs. The Office does not furnish email addresses to support researchers involved in basic and applied research when the focus and objectives of these projects fail to address campus-wide interests.

Effective Date: February 1, 2010
