Communications and Network
Systems provides connectivity for your computer to the campus network, email
and the Internet as well as connectivity for departments located off of UK's
campus. Below are answers to some commonly asked questions:

Q. How do
I get my computer connected to the network at UK?
A. Contact Communications
and Network Systems. We handle all connectivity for your phone, computer
and video conferencing needs.
Q. Is there a cost for this service?
A. Yes. Communication and Network Services is not a university wide funded
service.
Q. I need more network connections in my office, can I use my
hub, switch or wireless router from home or purchase one to use in my office?
A. No, this equipment does not meet the management, security or quality
of service that is required for the university network and may cause problems
for other users. To learn more please see our Policies
and Standards section.
Q. How much does it cost to have my computer(s) connected to
the network?
A. Please contact Communications
and Network Systems and we can provide you with a free estimate.

Q. What is the procedure to get my computer connected to the
network?
A. 1. Contact Communications and Network Systems and request a free consultation
and estimate. 2. Submit an UK requisition on-line
or fax to 859-257-9400 and reference the estimate number for the work to be
done.

Q. I have a laptop with wireless networking, can I use it at
UK?
A. Yes, the University of Kentucky has Wi-Fi, IEEE 802.11b/g, wireless
access in various locations and is intended to be used by students, visitors,
faculty and staff while they are away from their dorm room or office.
Q. Is there a cost to use the UK wireless network?
A. No. This service is provided free of charge.
Q. How can I find out where wireless access is available?

Q. How secure is my connection to the wireless network?
A. In order to make getting to the wireless network easier, we have not
required any extra software to be loaded on your laptop or hand held device.
So, if you have a wired connection, you should use this to be more secure as
well as faster and more reliable.

Q. How do I connect to UK from my home?
A. You can connect to UK's network via dial-up or the Internet. You may
use any service from home offered by any ISP, Internet Service Provider. (Also
