ACT Prep/English Semesters A and B (1/2 credit each)
This course is designed to help you prepare for taking the English portion of the ACT college entrance exam. It will provide test taking strategies and tips for getting ready for the test. More specifically, this course will provide an in depth study into the three basic components of the ACT English exam. You will practice usage and mechanics along with rhetorical skills. You will also examine content of the ACT Reading Test. In addition, you will look at the newest component of the ACT, the Writing Test. In this course, you will look at sample writing prompts from the test and sample responses. You will learn a variety of strategies for successfully completing the writing portion of the test. Throughout the course you will take a minimum of three practice tests. This course is also useful to students preparing for Advanced Placement tests.

AP Calculus — Semesters A and B (1/2 credit each)
This purpose of this course is to give students a good background in calculus as preparation for taking the Advanced Placement (AP) calculus examination. The focus of each semester is on the concepts of calculus. Students may check other textbooks on calculus and individuals with knowledge of calculus so that more than one presentation of concepts can be seen. Each semester includes asynchronous communication with the instructor via email for questions and feedback.

AP English — Semesters A and B (1/2 credit each)
This English Literature and Composition course was designed with two purposes: to prepare students for the Advanced Placement English examination and to build a solid foundation in literature, writing, and research as preparation for college level work. The course involves careful reading of a variety of literary works from a variety of time periods and genres. It includes examining the literary in terms of their time periods and the author’s uses of language and ideas. As a student in the course, you will consider literary elements such as character, symbolism, setting, and theme. You will learn to be a close, active, and critical reader. Writing assignments in the course will focus on the critical analysis of literature, and they will include essays in exposition and argument. You will be asked to do personal writing with the goal of developing a clear, coherent writing style reflecting richness and depth of thought.

AP Spanish -- Semester A and B (1/2 credit each)
This course is designed to prepare you for the Advanced Placement Spanish Language Examination. A thorough knowledge of Spanish grammar is required. You should have successfully completed a minimum of three years of Spanish. Assignments in this course consist of numerous exercises that parallel those on the AP exam. The assignments focus on grammar, reading, listening, and writing and are designed to prepare you for three of the four major segments of the exam: reading, writing, and listening. In addition to the work of this course, you can enhance your skills by listening to Spanish television, music, radio, and videos. Speaking with native Spanish speakers or someone who speaks the language will help prepare you for the fourth segment of the exam, speaking. The goal of his course is to guide your study and practice and thereby to further develop your skills in the language.

The first half of this beginning bookkeeping course covers basic bookkeeping records, the beginning balance sheet, recording income and expenses, the journal, ledger, trial balance and interpretation of records. The student solves problems which provide a working knowledge of complete bookkeeping. The second half of the course is a continuation of the first half in which attention is given to the combined cash journals and petty cash book.

The course does not include learning to speak French, but there are pronunciation guides to use with the pronunciation exercises that are provided in the course study guide. Because this is an independent study course, it is critically important to master the material of each lesson and assignment in order to fully understand the next one. Each of these two semesters of French continue the introduction into the basic principles of the language. Vocabulary and basic grammar are emphasized in each of the two semesters. Each of these two semesters is the beginning of the study of French at an intermediate level. It is assumed that a certain level of mastery of basic vocabulary and grammar of the language has already been thoroughly mastered. There are lessons and assignments in each of the two semesters.
Students must pass the final exam for each semester in order to begin work in the next semester. Students will be expected to accurately compose sentences in French and to translate phrases, sentences, and short paragraphs from French to English in the assignments for the lessons in each of these semesters.

German I Semesters A and B (1/2 credit each)
These two semesters cover the basic principles of the language through grammar by emphasizing a rapid development of reading and comprehension skills. In order to develop these skills, many vocabulary words have to be memorized. Several types of exercises are used in the lessons and in the assignments to be prepared and submitted including translations, phrase and sentence completion, and composing complete sentences in German. Each lesson requires thorough knowledge of earlier lessons. Patterns of words form earlier lessons will be present in later lessons. Students must pass the final exam for each semester in order to begin work in the next semester. Though not required, completing exercises in a German language workbook helps master vocabulary and grammar. The work in these courses does not include learning to speak German.

This is an elective course designed for students interested in the world of media. This fun course allows students to develop skills that are involved in newspaper, television, and media reporting. These two semesters provide an introduction into the Spanish language.
Vocabulary and basic grammar are emphasized in each of the two semesters through the study of words and grammatical constructions found in readings about Spanish culture. Although some English and Spanish words are cognates, they are spelled alike and they mean the same thing, many words simply have to be memorized. There are 19 assignments in each semester and a final, proctored exam. Students use the graded and corrected assignments and self-tests to measure their progress and to prepare for the final exam. Because this is an independent study course, it is critically important to master the material of each lesson and assignment in order to fully understand the next one. Patterns of words form earlier lessons will be present in later lessons. Skill with the language is built as you work through each lesson and complete each assignment. Constant review is necessary. It is important to practice old and new vocabulary words continuously. Since there are no aural models for pronunciation in the course material, students should read the explanations given in the textbook and read examples aloud. Listening to and watching television programs on Spanish language channels and watching movies in Spanish will provide some exposure to pronunciation.

These two semesters of Spanish continue the introduction into the basic principles of the language. Vocabulary and basic grammar are emphasized in each of the two semesters. Part I begins with the Civil War and Reconstruction, and it continues through the World Wars of the 20th century. The second half introduces the modern era and concludes with the 1920's.

Students in this course will study cultural and physical geographical concepts and information through considering the five fundamental themes in geography: location, place, human/environmental interaction, movement and regions.
