High School Courses - SOCIAL STUDIES

HUMANITIES A or B (1/2 unit each ) **

This course covers history and the arts from prehistoric times through the modern age. Students will be presented with an overview of the visual arts, literature, music, theatre, dance and architecture along with the political events surrounding them. Part I begins with early humans and continues through the Middle Ages. Part II begins with the Renaissance and continues through Modernism.

KENTUCKY STUDIES A or B (1/2 unit each)

A combination of geographical, historical, cultural and recreational topics are covered. Students will have the opportunity to research and report on local points of interest as well as become familiar with the entire state.

LAW AND JUSTICE A or B (1/2 unit each)

A study of the structure of our local, state and national governments with an emphasis on the processes by which governments operate. Community life, the economy, consumer decisions, foreign policy and the decision making process in government are included.

U.S. HISTORY A or B (1/2 unit each)

Part I begins with the Civil War and Reconstruction, and it continues through the World Wars of the 20th century. Part II includes the history of the second half of the 20th century, concluding with issues of the 90's. Major themes in American history, dealing with reform movements, values, economics, technology, environment, diversity, unity, conflict and democracy are addressed in both parts of the course.

UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT/POLITICAL SCIENCE A or B (1/2 unit each) **

A survey of all levels of government with emphasis on the federal level. Magruder's American Government is the basis of the course content.

WORLD CIVILIZATION A or B (1/2 unit each) **

This course begins with the foundations of Western Civilization and touches on Asian, African and Ancient American Civilizations. The first half includes the Renaissance, Reformation and the Scientific Revolution. It concludes with the Napoleonic Era and the unification of Italy and Germany. The second half introduces the modern era and concludes with the 1920's.

WORLD GEOGRAPHY A or B (1/2 unit each) **

Students in this course will study cultural and physical geographical concepts and information through considering the five fundamental themes in geography: location, place, human/environmental interaction, movement and regions. Students will investigate how geography affects the way people live. They will use map and graph skills to discover or exhibit information and they will focus on the critical thought necessary to understand geographic relationships.
