| The
NEMOC Directory Services team provides reliable service and support
for the directory products deployed within the enterprise. Directory
Services can be used to enhance service to end-users, as well as
provide a centralized means of administration.
For example,
a directory can be used to:
- Consolidate
accounts, such as email and network access accounts;
- Facilitate
campus-wide desktop management, application delivery, remote control
support and portal technology.
Currently, the
University provides network access accounts, email, desktop management,
application delivery and remote control support with Novell
Directory Services. Established in 1993, Novell has been the
industry leader in Directory Services for the past five years. The
University selected NDS because it is based on the X.500 standard
and offers tools, maturity, experienced personnel, on-campus and
direct vendor support, and world-wide usage. The Universitys
NDS tree currently services 60,000 objects (NDS-enabled products
such as servers, applications, printers, print queues, application
objects, users, groups, etc.).
UK also has
a burgeoning Microsoft Active Directory (AD) deployment capable
of providing similar services to that of NDS. AD provides network
access accounts, desktop management, application delivery and remote
control support in a Windows 2000 environment. As it matures, the
NEMOC Directory Services team will deploy and support AD as well
as NDS.
