Accounts :: HSM

How to Create an Account | Rules for Passwords | How to Change Your Password | How to Reset Your Password | Back to All Accounts

Creating an Account

Accounts on the Hiarchical Storage Manager (HSM) are not Link Blue accounts. The userid will be the same as your Link Blue account, but you must set and change the password separately. Changing your Link Blue password will not affect your HSM password. Changing your HSM password will not affect your Link Blue password.

Do one of the following to apply for HSM access:

  1. Print the Computing Accounts Request Form and fill it out. Under the heading Other accounts / services write HSM. Your dean, director, or the Security Liaison for your college or department must sign the form. Deliver, fax, or email it to User Account Services.
  2. Have your dean, director, or the Security Liaison for your college or department email all of the necessary information to User Account Services.
  3. If you are an eligible external researcher, then contact User Account Services for more information.

Currently there are no hard limits on HSM usage. Researchers must share the facility, and storage or transfers may be limited to ensure that each one gets a fair share of the resources. Allocations may be instituted at some future time.

Initializing an Account

Before transfering files to or from the HSM system, you must first log in ssh or an equivalent such as putty. When you login you will be prompted to create a mail forwarding file. Please supply an email address that can be used to contact you in the event of a problem affecting your account or data.>

After you have completed the initial setup, you can transfer files to and from your HSM account using sftp, scp, or the equivalents.

Rules for Passwords

Passwords for HSM accounts must follow these rules:

  1. Must have a minimum of 8 characters.
  2. Must contain at least one non-alphanumeric character.
  3. Must differ from the current password by at least four characters.
  4. Passwords are case sensitive.
  5. Passwords will expire after 6 months.

Changing the Password

You may change your HSM password at any time:

  1. Login to the HSM system using ssh or an equivalent.
  2. Select menu item 1.
  3. Enter in your current password and new password when prompted.

If you forget your password, you can have it reset to the default password by contacting the Customer Support Center.
