Modem Pool for Mac
Introduction
This document describes how to configure your Apple Computer to use the UK Modem Pool Connection. For more information about and a description of the services offered through UK Modem Pool, please see the UK Modem Pool Service document (http://www.uky.edu/IT/CustomerService/docs/about_modempool.html).
Before attempting to configure your Mac, please ensure your computer meets the following requirements:
- Macintosh OS 9.2.2, or OS X 10.1-10.3
- A modem that is installed and configured correctly. Your modem should be connected to a phone line during installation
Please refer to your computer's documentation for information regarding installation of these items.
You MUST have an active UK account to access the UK Modem Pool connection. Your UK Account is used to check your University Email Address and access UK systems. For help in activating your UK Account please see http://www.uky.edu/IT/CustomerService/docs/account_activation/.

For details on using an Internet Connection, including how to disconnect from a remote server, please reference the electronic help files with your operating system. To get help, choose Mac Help from the desktop and search for Remote Access.

Configuring Mac OS 9
- From the Apple menu and the Control Panel submenu, select the AppleTalk control panel.
- In the AppleTalk control panel window, locate the Connect via option and select Modem/Printer Port. The control panel should look like Figure 1.1.

- Close the control panel. If you made changes in the previous step, you will be prompted to save your changes. Click the Save button to save your changes.
- From the Apple menu and the Control Panel submenu, select the TCP/IP control panel.
- In the TCP/IP control panel window, locate the Connect via option and select PPP. Underneath the Connect via option, locate the Configure option and select Using PPP Server. In the text area under Search Domains, type uky.edu. The control panel should look like Figure 1.2.

- Close the control panel. You will be prompted to save your changes. Click the Save button to save your changes.
- Now you must restart your computer to allow for the previous changes to take effect in your computer. With the Finder as the selected application, choose Restart from the Special menu. Allow your computer to shut down and start back up fully.
- From the Apple menu and the Control Panel submenu, select the Remote Access control panel. The control panel should look like Figure 1.3. If not, click the small triangle to the left of the Setup label.

- In the Remote Access control panel, fill in the fields as follows:
- Name - Type in your UK Account userID.
- Password - Type in your UK Account password. The password is case sensitive, so ensure that Caps Lock is off.
- Save Password - Check the box in order to save your password for uses of Remote Access after this initial use.
- Number - Type 3237547 (excluding hyphens or spaces).

- Click on the Connect button. Your modem will pick up the phone line and connect to the UK Modem Pool Service. The Remote Access window will look like Figure 1.4 once a connection has been made to the UK Modem Pool.

- Once a remote connection has been established, open a web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, etc) and attempt to view UK's main web site (http://www.uky.edu). If the site appears, the connection to the UK Modem Pool Service is working correctly.
If your computer does not connect to the UK Modem Pool as described above, contact the IT Customer Service Center by phone (859.257.1300) or email (helpdesk@uky.edu).

- In the Dock, open the System Preferences by clicking on the System Preferences icon. Figure 2.1 shows the System Preferences icon in the Dock. If the System Preferences icon is not in the Dock, you can find it by clicking on the Apple menu item at the top of the screen, and then click on System Preferences.

- In the System Preferences window, open the Network options by clicking on the Network icon under the Internet & Network section, as shown in Figure 2.2.

- The Network options window will appear. Locate the Show selection menu, and choose Internal Modem. The window will change to show networking options using the internal modem, similar to the following Figure 2.3. If the window looks different, click on the TCP/IP tab near the top of the window.

- Find the Configure option, and select Using PPP from the selection menu. Find and type in the following (exactly as listed) into the Domain Name Servers (or DNS Servers) textbox:
The window should look like Figure 2.4. Click on the Apply Now button to save your changes.

- Click on the PPP tab to bring up the PPP options. Fill out the fields as listed below:
- Service Provider - Enter UK Modem Pool into the text field.
- Account Name - Type in your UK Account userID.
- Password - Type in your UK Account password. The password is case sensitive, so ensure that Caps Lock is off.
- Save Password - Check the box in order to save your password for future connections. For computers that are shared, leave the box unchecked.
- Number - Type 3237547 (excluding hyphens or spaces).
The window should be filled out similar to Figure 2.5. Click on the Apply Now button to save your changes. Close the Networking window.

Connecting Mac OS X
- To dial into the UK Modem Pool Service and test your connection, use the Internet Connect application. To run the application, open your hard drive folder (the hard drive icon will be located on your desktop). On the window, locate the program bar and click on the Applications option. In the Applications window, locate and double-click the Internet Connect icon. Figure 2.6 shows the appearance of the Internet Connect icon in Mac OS 10.1 & 10.2.

- The modem dialer window will open. Information you entered into the System Preferences windows will be listed in the modem dialer. Double check the information for correctness. If you did not specify to save your password in System Preferences, enter your UK Account password in the Password field. The modem dialer window should look like Figure 2.7.

- Click on the Connect button. Your modem will pick up the phone line and connect to the UK Modem Pool Service. The Internet Connection window will look like Figure 2.8 once a connection has been made.
