Checking your machine's Active Directory Status

At some point when seeking technical support, you may be asked if your machine is a member of the Active Directory. The easiest way to tell is to ask your Departmental IT Technician. If you do not have a Departmental IT Technician, or they are unavailable, you can try to determine if your machine is a member of the Active Directory by following these steps:

  1. On your keyboard, hold in your Windows Key and Hit the Pause/Break key. This will open the System Properties Window.
Your Windows Key looks like and is usually located near your space bar. Your Pause / Break key will look similar to and is usually located in the upper right area of your keyboard.
If that doesn't work you can right click on your My Computer icon and then click on properties.
  2. Click on the Computer Name tab. You should have a window that looks similar to the following:
  3. Look at the area under the Full Computer name. If your computer is part of a Domain, the label will read Domain, and the value should be either ad.uky.edu or mc.uky.edu. If your machine is not part of a domain, the label will read Workgroup, and the value could be anything. If your machine is part of a Domain that is not either ad.uky.edu or mc.uky.edu you will need to contact your Departmental Technical Support for assistance. An example of a System Properties window for both a Work Group and a domain is located below.
