For the UK Medical Center, the Hardware Standard Recommendations are posted, in Adobe PDF format, at http://www.mc.uky.edu/mcis/about/MCIS%20Support%20Standards.pdf
Basic system requirements are identical for both sites.
Justification:
The synergies enabled by rapid execution of office-suite applications provide significant leverage in problem solving and presentation to typical desktop users. Under-powered hardware platforms will impede efficiency efforts and result in minimal productivity gains.
Technical Considerations:
This platform should be a true state-of-the-art platform. Expected productive life for users of general workstations should be approximately 24-36 months; hardware upgrades will be necessitated by software upgrades and/or introduction of additional complexities in the working environment (e.g., simultaneous use of additional software tools). The new procurement standard is expected to minimize the necessity for memory upgrades during the life cycle of the hardware. Departments seeking to refresh large volumes of desktop technology are advised to seriously consider leasing as an option for acquisition.
