3305 Wireless Hardware Components: Access Points and Client Interface Cards

IT & MCIS

DEFINITION OF STANDARD:
The wireless equipment infrastructure consists of Access Points and Client interface cards.

RATIONALE: IEEE 802.11b and Cisco dynamic WEP compliant with SNMP V2 or higher and web configuration interface.

FUTURE DIRECTION:
Desktop hardware requirements change as the software applications become more sophisticated and the underlying operating system continue to add features and enhancements. Hardware systems recommendations are reviewed twice a year. As products become available to support new applications or resolve known problems, the supported list will be revised.

Recommended Standard(s):

  • SNMP V2 or higher compliant
  • IEEE 802.11b compliant
  • Cisco dynamic WEP compliant

Recommended Product(s):

Justification:
The wireless network consists of Cisco Systems, Inc. equipment that is centrally managed through Cisco Works 2000 and web browser interfaces. A single vendor wireless approach ensures compatibility and increases the level of service available to customers. A single wireless standard is necessary to support the diverse wireless computing needs of All University departments. IEEE 802.11b with Cisco dynamic WEP technology improves speed, performance and security needs by allowing the user to receive data at 11 Mbps with the best security technology available. Currently Cisco Systems, Inc is the only vendor supporting dynamic WEP security for wireless systems using the IEEE 802.11b standard. Dynamic WEP uses WEP keys that are generated dynamically upon user authentication, not static keys that are physically associated with a client, thereby providing much-improved security as compared with other vendors’ cards.

Technical Considerations:
All devices should be SNMP manageable, conform to the IEEE 802.11b standards and be compatible with Cisco Systems, Inc. implementation of dynamic WEP for security.
