DEFINITION
OF STANDARD:
Integrated Services Digital Network is an International telecommunications
standard for providing a digital service through the dial-up telephone
network. Two types of ISDN service is offered: basic rate interface and
primary rate interface. Basic rate interface (BRI) provides two bearer
channels of 64-Kbs each, plus a 16-Kbs signaling channel. The primary
rate interface (PRI) provides 23 bearer channels, plus a 64-Kps signaling
channel. Any combination of voice and data can be carried over the B channels.

Justification:
Voicemail helps to reduce departmental operating costs.. The voice mail
system can take messages or redirect calls without the assistance of a
live attendant.
Technical Considerations:
Give ample lead-time when ordering ISDN services. Sometimes, vendor ISDN
devices can be difficult to sync-up with the campus ISDN network.
