Empowering Transformation: The University of Kentucky’s Information Technology Strategic Plan (ITSP) represents the vision and ideas of the University of Kentucky’s (UK) community to define the future advancement of IT at the University. This plan supports the extensive vision of the University’s Strategic Plan – Transforming Tomorrow – as well as the five key areas that clearly delineate priorities for investment and growth at UK: undergraduate student success, graduate education, diversity and inclusivity, research and scholarly work, and outreach and community engagement. The ITSP outlines what outcomes are desired through the deployment of abundant and effective IT resources and why these outcomes are integral to the evolution of the institution. The ITSP was created by the University community through a process that established key task forces to focus on areas of IT impact – enterprise systems enablement, infrastructure, research enablement and outreach, teaching and learning enablement, and student IT enablement. These task forces were composed of students, faculty, and staff, who participated in brainstorming sessions that produced nine recommendations containing 57 specific action items. The action items contained in these recommendations serve the following broad functions: Providing Baseline Fundamentals: These are items that must be addressed in order to provide UK with the IT elements that are essential for continued high level of operation and efficacy. Many of these actions involve a process of continued attentiveness to sustain and modernize our current infrastructure and services. Establishing an Environment of IT Abundance: These are items that will position UK to have an environment in which IT is abundant – where it is innovative, up-to-date, made available to and adopted by students, faculty, and staff to support them in their work as they endeavor to advance the larger mission and vision of the University. Supporting Innovation: These are items that will position UK to be at the cutting edge as a University focused on stimulating and empowering intellectual achievement, innovation, and entrepreneurship that emanates from discovery and the growth of knowledge through the use of technology. The creation of the ITSP is critical in the advancement of IT at UK. It should serve as a foundational baseline for any successive and continuing activities to achieve the outcomes intended by this plan. Execution of the plan’s recommendations should commence immediately. By doing so, the University will be following a blueprint for IT that benefits from the collective wisdom of and the formal endorsement by University stakeholders.
