November 14, 2008International Education Day is Friday, November 21
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 14, 2008) − In celebration of International Education Week the University of Kentucky Office of International Affairs has invited 50 Kentucky high school students interested in learning about international affairs to UK’s campus for International Education Day on Friday, November 21.
The day will have a general theme of service, with a focus on international service, and presenters will highlight the ways in which higher education can prepare students to study, work or serve abroad. Students from Menifee County High School, George Rogers Clark High School in Clark County and Bryan Station High School in Fayette County will participate.
The visitors will be welcomed to campus by Assistant Provost for International Programs Susan Carvalho. Planned activities include an interactive session on language and culture, a session on education abroad with a focus on programs with a service component and a cross-cultural activity reiterating the need for service.
UK’s international students and others will contribute. Two returned U.S. Peace Corps volunteers will share their experiences in Malawi. UK student Tom Sewell will also speak. Sewell is a current student in the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce who studied abroad on a Heidelberg Scholarship. He received a Fulbright to teach English in Austria and recently completed an internship at the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest, Romania.
The event will take place in the Conference Room and First Ladies Room in the Boone Center
9 a.m.- 2 p.m. This is the ninth annual commemoration of International Education Week, which is Nov. 17 to 21. Worldwide, more than 100 countries are expected to participate. The celebration is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to recognize the global exchange environment between the United States and other countries.
