UK Students Honored for Rescuing Bus Crash Victims in Ecuador

Some UK students, faculty and staff were recently recognized at a campus reception for the courage and compassion they showed during a trip to Ecuador.

In May, a group of UK students, faculty and staff who were on a Shoulder-to-Shoulder medical mission trip found themselves in the right place at the right time. They were on their way to work at a medical clinic in the Andes Mountains when the cars in front of them stopped, revealing that a bus and tanker truck had collided. The bus had rolled into a ravine.

The driver of the bus died. Many others were injured. The UK group reacted quickly, using the medical supplies they had to help the victims. They even used their Shoulder-to-Shoulder program t-shirts to control bleeding. An Ecuadorian newspaper reported that a total of 27 people were treated for their injuries.

UK student Robert Sutter and others were interviewed by reporters. “For us the altitude made it difficult for us to breathe, but we are helping as much as we can,” Sutter told the newspaper. Reports indicate that the road was blocked for more than three hours due to the rescue operation.

Lexington television stations and the Lexington Herald-Leader have covered the story.
