UK Celebrates Diversity

New events and returning favorites highlight the 20th Cultural Diversity Festival at the University of Kentucky throughout the month of March. The festival aims to promote cultural awareness to the UK campus and Lexington community through a month of activities and events. This year the festival offers approximately 30 events throughout the month to UK students, faculty, and staff, and is also hoping to reach out to the Lexington community more than ever before. Festival highlights include:

International Talent Night: This returning celebration will be held Saturday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall. The exciting event will feature entertainment by people from all over the world.

Taste of Our World:  Perhaps the festival's most popular, and certainly tastiest, event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. March 4 in the Grand Ballroom of the UK Student Center. This event features a diverse menu of culture-rich foods from across the continents.  During the Taste of Our World celebration, the festival committee members are bringing back another favorite – a Ten Thousand Villages sale of jewelry, home decor and gifts. To view the kinds of items that will be on sale, visit the Ten Thousand Villages Web site. Ten Thousand Villages works with over 100 artisan groups in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to bring handmade jewelry, home decor, gifts and more to the rest of the world. As one of the world’s oldest and largest fair trade organizations, Ten Thousand Villages builds long-term relationships with artisans that are based on mutual understanding and respect.

Taste of Our World tickets will be sold for each serving of the dishes from around the world. Tickets will be sold at the door for $1 each or seven tickets for $5. Payment will be accepted in cash, Plus Account or Flex Dollars.

Party in the Park: Saturday, March 28, the Cultural Diversity Festival will wrap up its month of events by hosting a community event at Woodland Park in Lexington. "Party in the Park" will offer various recreational activities for people of all ages.

The festival includes a variety of other events, including Diversity Dialogues and a career development component. Visit www.uky.edu/DiversityFestival for a full schedule of events or contact the UK Office of International Affairs at (859) 257-4067.
