I. Health Insurance Waiver Deadlines
Health insurance is mandatory for all international students at the University of Kentucky. International students who already have insurance that meets UK’s minimum insurance requirements can apply for a waiver. For continuing students, the deadline to apply for the online waiver is Thursday, January 22. New students should apply between Friday, January 23 and Sunday, February 22. The waiver can be completed after the deadline has passed, however, a late fee will be charged. The minimum requirements and instructions for completing the waiver are available at http://www.uky.edu/IntlAffairs/students_scholars/health_insurance_student.html. Students with questions about this process should contact OIA staff member Fady Abdelsayed at faabde2@uky.edu
II. Monday: Martin Luther King Day Schedule Changes
The Office of international Affairs and most offices on the UK campus will be closed on Monday, January 19 in commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Due to the holiday, CATS buses, the LexTran Commonwealth Stadium Route and the LexTran Ag Science Shuttle will not operate on that day. Additionally, the Kentucky Clinic Shuttle and Medical Center Shuttle will not run. However, University of Kentucky Parking & Transportation Services will be offering the On-Demand bus service Monday evening beginning at 7 p.m. and continuing until midnight. The Green Night Route will operate on its regular schedule on Friday, January 16 and Saturday, January 17, as will the On-Demand service on Sunday, January 18. Visit www.uky.edu/Parking/transportation-buses-shuttles.html for route and schedule information.
III. Spring 2009 ESL Classes
The UK Center for English as a Second Language offers the Semi-Intensive Language Program, as well as a variety of new specialty courses for Spring 2009. Two new classes will focus on professional presentations. There are also mid-day classes available. Visit the OIA Web site for more information.
IV. Cross-Cultural Workshop – Spring 2009
The OIA Cross-Cultural Workshop gives American students and international students an opportunity to discuss cultural issues, learn from each other and make new friends. The next installment takes place on UK’s campus on Saturday, February 21. Applications are due by Friday, February 6. There is a $15 participation fee, which includes lunch and materials. Space is limited. Click here to download a registration form.
V. TaxiCats Low-Cost Taxi Service Program
In an effort to provide low-cost taxi service to UK students, University of Kentucky Parking & Transportation Services (PTS) and All American Taxi have revitalized the TaxiCats program. TaxiCats allows UK students with valid student IDs to ride within the boundaries of Chevy Chase, Broadway, Greg Page Apartments and Main Street for just $2 per person per ride. Additionally, All American Taxi will provide a 10% discount on taxi service outside the boundaries to UK students with valid student IDs. The discounted services are available year-round. All American Taxi accepts UK PLUS accounts, and has an average wait time of 15 to 20 minutes. To arrange a ride, contact them at 859-381-TAXI. More information is available on the PTS Web site.
