OIA Announcements: Tax Info/ESL Update/Chinese New Year

I. Does Your Employer Have Your Correct Address?

All international students who worked on campus in 2008 should check with their employer to be sure their local address is up-to-date. This will ensure that UK payroll has the correct information and that you receive your W2 tax reports. Note that updating your student record in myUK does not notify payroll of the address. You must verify the information with your employer.

II. ESL Specialty Classes Postponed

The UK Center for English as a Second Language has announced that the Semi-Intensive English Program classes will begin on Thursday, January 22 at 6 p.m. in White Hall Classroom Building.  Applications are still welcomed. Call 257-5998.

All Specialty Classes for the Spring I Session will be delayed by one week.  Some new classes have also been added.

Participants need to register for classes with the Center for ESL in Patterson Office Tower, Room 1235 or 1237.

III. International Conversation Hour Tonight

The International Conversation Hour will meet Wednesday, January 21 in the Writing Center located in the fifth floor of the William T. Young Library.  For directions, please click here. The doors will open at 6 p.m. and the discussion will begin shortly thereafter.

IV. Lexington Celebrates Chinese New Year

The Kentucky American Chinese Association will host two Chinese New Year celebrations this weekend to welcome the “Year of the Ox.” The festivities begin on Saturday, January 24 with a marketplace of Chinese food and cultural exhibits at 6 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. a performance including music, dance, kung fu and acrobatics will take place. Both events are at the Singletary Center for the Arts on the University of Kentucky campus at 405 Rose Street. On Sunday, January 25 at 1:30 p.m. the performance will be repeated at the downtown branch of the Lexington Public Library. All activities are free and open to the public, but reservations are necessary for Sunday’s program. Call 231-5559.

V. Women of Color Support Group

The Women of Color Support Group at the Counseling & Testing Center aims to provide a safe place for women to vent, strategize, get and give encouragement, and learn from each other. Topics can include self-care, stress, family, relationships, spirituality, racism, sexism and academic success. Group members are encouraged to bring up the topics that are important to them.

The group will be led by Dr. Tina Bryant and Dr. Carolyn Spearman-Teamer (both women of color) and will meet on Tuesdays from 12:30-1:45 p.m. in 201 Frazee Hall. The group is open to women of color who are students at UK taking at least six credit hours. Undergraduate, graduate and professional students are welcome. Participation is free, and new members can join at any point during the semester. To become a member, call 257-8701. The first meeting of the term takes place on Tuesday, January 27.
