OIA Announcements: Deadline Extended/Turkish Film Tonight

Update

The deadline for applications for the Spring 2009 OIA Cross-Cultural Workshop has been extended from Friday, February 6 to Wednesday, February 11. There is a $15 participation fee, which includes lunch and materials. Space is limited. Download a registration form at www.uky.edu/intlaffairs.

I. Turkish Film Tonight

Everyone is invited to watch Beyaz Melek in the William T. Young Library auditorium tonight at 7 p.m. The film, which translates to “White Angel," is presented by the Turkish Student Association, the International Hospitality Program and International Student Council. A Turkish dessert will be served after the movie.

II. Call for K Week Volunteers

One way to get involved on campus and make a difference at UK and in the Lexington community is to join the K Crew. Dedicated students are needed to join in planning, organizing and facilitating K Week and K2 events like Big Blue U, We Are UK and UK FUSION. Wildcats who are enthusiastic and eager to assist new students with the transition into the Kentucky family can find the application online at www.uky.edu/KWeek. Be sure to return your application by Friday, February 6, at 4 p.m. to Patterson Office Tower room 518.

III. Relationship Enhancement® Training for International Students

Relationship Enhancement® is a free training program is specially-designed to give international students the tools to successfully navigate the relationships in their lives while here in America and in their countries of origin. International students from several Kentucky colleges and universities will come together to explore topics, including effective communication, problem solving and tips for managing money and stress. Participants will return in April for additional instruction on leading similar workshops on campus or in their countries of origin.

The first workshop will take place on Friday, February 6 at the IDEALS of Kentucky office in Frankfort, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Additional weekend classes will be offered in February and March in 8-hour or 4-hour sessions.

Relationship Enhancement® is provided by IDEALS of KY, the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), the Bluegrass Healthy Marriage Initiative (BHMI) and the UK Department of Family Studies. IV. Global Scholars International Film Series Continues

The Network of Global Scholars, along with The Cats Den and The Late Night Film Series, will present Amandla!: A Revolution in Four Part Harmony on Monday, February 2 at 8 p.m. in The Cats Den. This must-see documentary examines the role of music as a means of protest and survival in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. V. Noh Theatre at Georgetown College

Georgetown College will host four professional Noh actors from the Kanze School of Noh in Kyoto, Japan this weekend for a workshop and public events. On Saturday, January 31, the actors will demonstrate the dance, music, masks and costuming of the Noh theatre, and perform highlights from famous pieces. On Sunday, February 1, there will be a Noh recital.
