OIA Announcement: Suspicious E-mail Messages

To Our International Students:

This is just a reminder that all e-mail communication from the Office of International Affairs (OIA) is sent from UK e-mail accounts that include the extension “uky.edu.”

Recently, some international students received e-mail messages that appear to come from the Office of International Affairs, but are actually spam. OIA has learned of at least two versions of the e-mails. In one example, the subject of the e-mail is “Your Visa has Expired!,” and there is a short, inappropriate message in English. In another version, the subject is “Need an Internship?,” and the message is in a Romanized version of what appears to be Hindi. In both cases, the sender’s name is listed as “Office of International Affairs” or “OIA.” However, the sender’s e-mail address is not affiliated with the University of Kentucky.

OIA has contacted IT professionals on campus who are investigating these incidents. In the meantime, students who receive suspicious e-mails are asked to forward them to michelle.gorin@uky.edu.
