Reminders
- International Conversation Night takes place tonight at 6 p.m. in the UK Writing Center on the fifth floor of the William T. Young Library.
- The PNC Festival Latino de Lexington takes place Saturday, October 10, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. in Robert F. Stephens Courthouse Plaza.
- OIA Cross-Cultural Workshop applications are due by Wednesday, October 14. Download a registration form or read more about this opportunity on the OIA Web site.
- Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will deliver a public lecture at the University of Kentucky at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 14, at the Singletary Center for the Arts. While the lecture is free and open to the public, tickets must be reserved in advance of the event. Individuals can reserve up to four tickets in advance in person only at the Singletary Center Ticket Office. For more information, see the UK Web site.
I. New F-1 Student Advisor Assignments
In an effort to better serve students, International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) in the Office of International Affairs has now assigned an F-1 advisor to each student according to the first letter of the student’s last name (family name).
Students whose last names begin with the letters “A-L,” should contact Emily King in 215 Bradley Hall at emily.king@uky.edu or 257-4067, ext. 241. Students whose last names begin with the letters “M-Z,” should contact William Arnold in 210 Bradley Hall at william.arnold@uky.edu or 257-4067, ext. 224. Please contact the appropriate advisor when you need assistance.
II. Optional Practical Training (OPT) Workshops
Additional Optional Practical Training (OPT) Workshops have been scheduled this semester to meet students’ needs. The workshops will be held in Bradley Hall room 207. Attendees can select one of the following times: Tuesday, October 13 at 3 p.m.; Thursday, October 15 at 1 p.m.; or Friday, October 16 at 10 a.m. Anyone who is interested may attend, but seating is limited. Please make a reservation by calling 257-4067, ext. 241.
III. Vice Consul of the Japanese Consulate to Visit
Mr. Takeshi Kodo, Vice Consul of the Japanese Consulate in Nashville, will give two presentations that are open to all on Friday, October 9. At 11 a.m., he will discuss the Japan Exchange & Teaching Program (JET) in room 230 of the UK Student Center. The JET Program gives new graduates and young professionals from around the world the opportunity to participate in international youth exchange; to assist with foreign language education in Japanese schools; and to promote better cross-cultural understanding. Students interested in maintaining or improving their Japanese comprehension and speaking skills, as well as those whose native language is Japanese, are encouraged to attend the Japanese Conversation Forum in the Gallery Room of the William T. IV. International Student Workshop: Getting Involved on Campus
Join other international students, as well as staff from the UK Counseling and Testing Center and the Office of International Affairs, to talk about life in the United States. This week’s session is “Getting Involved on Campus,” a discussion about the university’s many student organizations and other opportunities. Meet in room 207 in Bradley Hall, 1-2 p.m. on Friday, October 9. Visit the OIA Web site for a complete list of this semester’s workshop topics.
V. Patterson School Film Festival: “Beyond Belief”
The Patterson School Film Festival features “Beyond Belief,” tomorrow at 7 p.m. in room 110 of the Whitehall Classroom Building. The film is a compassionate and hopeful journey that asks, "Can individuals and communities with opposing beliefs find meaningful common ground?"
VI. Stuckert Career Center Hours
The James W. Stuckert Career Center will be closed through Friday due to career fairs. Regular hours will resume at 8 a.m. on Monday, October 12.
