Notes and Reminders
- International Conversation Hour takes place today in the Commonwealth House of the Gaines Center properties. Doors open at 6 p.m. Click here for directions.

I. Latin American Week
The Latin American Student Organization is celebrating Latin American Week, November 17-21. Additional sponsors are UK Student Government, the Office of International Affairs, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the International Studies Program, the Latin American Studies Program and Hispanic Studies. Upcoming activities include:
- Perspectivas: The Mixture of Latin and American Cultures, a panel discussion about the mixture of Latin and American cultures, noting especially what it’s like to be Latino in America today, in Room 363 of the Student Center on Wednesday, November 19, 6-8 p.m.
- A screening of “Maria Full of Grace,” a film about a pregnant, seventeen-year-old Columbian girl who takes a job as a drug mule, flying to the United States with pellets of cocaine in her stomach, which will be shown in the W. T. Young Library Auditorium on Thursday, November 20, 7-9 p.m.
- A finale dinner at DeVassa, a Brazilian-themed café at 401 West Main Street in Lexington on Friday, November 21, 7-9 p.m.
II. Make Thanksgiving Plans Now
The University of Kentucky Alumni Association invites all international students and their families to an American Thanksgiving dinner on Tuesday, November 25, 5-7 p.m., at the King Alumni House. Click here or call 859.257.8905 to make reservations. Staff members from the Office of International Affairs will also attend.
Parking & Transportation Services will help students reach their Thanksgiving holiday destinations by providing a free shuttle to Blue Grass Airport. The shuttle will run Monday, November 24, Tuesday, November 25 and Wednesday, November 26, with daily campus pickup times of 6 a.m., 8 a.m., 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Students should plan to leave campus at least two hours prior to take-off. III. Spring Break Applications Due
Looking for a rewarding and inexpensive way to spend your Spring Break? Alternative Spring Break, a program within the UK Center for Community Outreach and partnered with the national service organization Break Away, has three trips available for Spring Break 2009. Most applications are due Tuesday, November 25 at 5 p.m. Contact the Center for Community Outreach for information. Students interested in the PLAY Appalachian Spring Break Program in David, Kentucky can e-mail sjausm2@uky.edu for information.
IV. Columnist Katha Pollitt Visits Campus
The Graduate School presents “Coffee with Katha Pollitt” on Friday, November 21, 10 a.m. in the President’s Room at the Singletary Center for the Arts. Katha Pollitt is an award-winning columnist for The Nation. Her "Subject to Debate" column, which The Washington Post called "the best place to go for original thinking on the left," appears every other week in The Nation; it is frequently reprinted in newspapers across the country. She will also give a public lecture followed by a reception and book signing on Thursday, November 20 in the Grand Ballroom at the Student Center. Click here for details.
V. CRY Sparsh – The Touch Event
The UK chapter of Child Rights and You (CRY) sponsors “Sparsh – The Touch” on Saturday, November 22 at 7 p.m. in Memorial Hall. This fundraiser for child rights will include singing, dance, drama and a silent auction. Student tickets are just $5. E-mail cryukylex@gmail.com for information.
VI. International Student Tea Time: Working on Campus
International Student Tea Time, the discussion workshop designed to assist international students with a variety of issues related to their experiences in the United States will meet in 207 Bradley Hall on Friday, November 21 at 12:30 p.m. This week’s topic is “Working on Campus: Is this really my job?,” a look at how to deal with job frustrations and become a successful employee.
VII. GradShare, a Graduate Student Networking Resource
The University of Kentucky is participating in the private beta launch of GradShare, a new information service for graduate student community networking. GradShare provides key resources for graduate students at its Web site: www.gradshare.com. Information on the site is organized by program of study and topics of interest. Users can ask (and answer) questions related to research, teaching, and career development. Graduate students are invited to register, test the site and tell the developers what they think.
