I. Income Tax Assistance
Tax season is approaching. All F1 and J1 international students (and accompanying dependents) are required to complete an income tax return annually. For most of you, this will mean completing Form 1040NR-EZ (U.S. Nonresident Alien Income Tax Return) and Form 8843. You are required to file an income tax return even if you have no income from U.S. sources, or if your income is exempt from U.S. taxes due to treaties between the U.S. and your home country.
Watch your mail for any forms you may need. Those who are employed will receive Form W-2 by the end of this week. International students with scholarships, fellowships, grants and treaty benefits will also need Form 1042-S. This form will be mailed to you before March 15. Once you have all the forms you need, you can begin preparing your taxes. The Office of International Affairs is not authorized to give tax advice. However, free tax software and a tax clinic will be available from the University of Kentucky.
CINTAX software: All current F-1 students, J-1 students and J-1 scholars received passwords for the CINTAX software system via e-mail today. This information was sent to the e-mail address on record in your MyUK account. Check your “junk” mail folder, if you do not have a message in your inbox. If you did not receive an e-mail, make sure the e-mail address in your MyUK account is correct so that you will receive the passwords when they are distributed again on Wednesday, February 17.
VITA Clinic: The UK College of Law offers a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program through Thursday, April 15 (except Spring Break week, March 16 -20) in room 47 of the College of Law. Volunteers will be available Monday through Fridays from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturday from Noon until 5 p.m. The VITA volunteers can prepare your federal return or review your CINTAX return and help you with your state return. For more information on VITA, click here. To make an appointment, click here. Please take all of the necessary forms and documents with you to your appointment.
II. OIA Offices in Transition
Several members of the OIA staff are moving to new offices within Bradley Hall Wednesday and Thursday, February 10 and 11. Walk-in appointments are discouraged on these days. Our offices will be closed on those days for safety reasons, and F-1 and J-1 advisors will only be available for emergencies. Those needing assistance are advised to come in before February 10 or after regular office hours resume on Friday, February 12.
