I. UK International and Domestic Student Scholarships

Applications are now being accepted for two Office of International Affairs scholarships through Friday, March 6. Both awards are for the Fall 2009 semester. The UK International Student Scholarship is presented to international undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate strong academic scholarship and financial need. Approximately 20 $1,000 scholarships are awarded each semester. The Viji Jeganathan Scholarship for Cross-Cultural Understanding is an endowed scholarship in memory of an outstanding international student who died of leukemia while studying at UK. The $1,000 award is presented to an individual who demonstrates leadership and ability in bridging cultural differences and who promotes communication among students of diverse nationalities at UK or in the Lexington community. Click here for an application.

II. Volunteers Needed for “Wildcats Around the World”

The UK Education Abroad Student Ambassadors are hosting “Wildcats Around the World,” an opportunity for international students and UK students who have studied abroad to share their experiences with the campus. Various tables of students will discuss the culture and traditions of specific countries or regions. Bring your enthusiasm, pictures, souvenirs and stories. Education abroad will provide brochures and other information to encourage students to study in these areas.

“Wildcats Around the World” will take place on Wednesday, February 25 between 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Classroom Building. Students are not required to volunteer for the entire day. However, preference will be given to those who can donate more time. To volunteer or get more information, contact Rachel Schoen at rlscho2@uky.edu as soon as possible. Lunch will be provided for all volunteers.

III. International Student Workshop: I Don’t Understand the Slang!

Join other international students, as well as staff from the UK Counseling and Testing Center and the Office of International Affairs, to talk about life in the United States. This week’s session, “I Don’t Understand the Slang,” will focus on common English language expressions and idioms that are often used in the classroom or in general conversation. Meet in room 207 of Bradley Hall, 2-3 p.m. on Friday, February 6.

IV. IHP Valentine’s Day Open House

The International Hospitality Program invites all international students to visit the William T. Young Library Gallery on Sunday, February 8 for a Valentines Day Open House. Stop by between 2:30-4:30 p.m. to meet host families from the Lexington community and enjoy some sweet and savory snacks.

V. Call for Diversity Festival Events

UK’s Cultural Diversity Festival is an annual celebration that takes place throughout the month of March. The purpose of the festival is to raise awareness of and appreciation for the diversity present on our campus. If you are a member of a campus student organization planning an event in March, consider adding it to the festival’s Web site and posters. Remember that the details of the event MUST be confirmed when the information is submitted. To include your event, e-mail suzanne.anandappa@uky.edu. The deadline for submitting activities for the printed materials is Friday, February 13.

Reminders

I. Verify myUK Information for Tax Assistance

Anyone who has not received an e-mail including passwords and instructions for the CINTAX tax preparation software system by Thursday, February 12 should verify their address in myUK. OIA and the Graduate School provide UK international students and scholars access to the software each year, and instructions are distributed via our immigration software. CINTAX passwords and instructions were e-mailed to all F-1 students from last week. F-1 students who did not receive the information should verify their e-mail address at myUK and/or make sure the UK e-mail account is being forwarded to another chosen e-mail address that is checked frequently. J-1 students and scholars will receive the CINTAX information at midnight on Thursday, February 12, so they should verify their e-mail address today. (Remember to check any spam or junk e-mail folders, if the notification is not immediately visible in your account.) The information will be distributed to everyone again on Wednesday, February 18, so it is vital to verify your myUK information prior to that date.
Additional assistance is available through the University of Kentucky College of Law Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) clinic. It is recommended international students use the CINTAX program first and then have the completed forms reviewed at the clinic. To read more about VITA or make an appointment, visit www.uky.edu/law/tax<http://www.uky.edu/law/tax>.

II. A Focus on Gaza

The Muslim Student Association is hosting two events on the war in Gaza:

III. International Student Workshop: Studying Smarter

Join other international students, as well as staff from the UK Counseling and Testing Center and the Office of International Affairs, to talk about life in the United States. This week’s session, “How to Study Smarter and Better,” will focus on time management, note taking and other tools for success in the classroom. Meet in room 207 of Bradley Hall, 2-3 p.m. on Friday, February 13.

IV. Volunteer for the UK Cultural Diversity Festival

Planning for the 2009 UK Cultural Diversity Festival, which takes place in March, is underway. All students should consider taking part in this campus-wide celebration. There are multiple opportunities to volunteer:
