II. Spring Break International Classroom/Cross-Cultural Workshop Deadline Extended

Join OIA for a 2-day International Classroom/ Cross-Cultural Workshop in Eastern Kentucky on Thursday and Friday, March 19-20 during Spring Break. This program invites international students to make 45-minute presentations about their home countries to elementary school students in Knox County. Staff from OIA can assist with planning the classroom presentations. International student participants will also have an opportunity to learn about the Appalachian region of the United States.

Participants will stay overnight at Pine Mountain State Park and visit the historic Cumberland Gap located in the heart of the Appalachian mountains. The cost is $20, which includes lodging, transportation and several meals. In addition to the $20 fee, students will need to bring approximately $10 for meals that are not covered. The application deadline for this program has been extended to Friday, March 13, but space is limited. Click here to download an application. For additional information please contact Kristen Wallitsch at kristenjapan@uky.edu.

III. Emerging Leader Institute – Fall 2009

The Office of Student Involvement is offering the Emerging Leader Institute (ELI) for the Fall 2009 semester. ELI is a 3-credit hour, graded leadership development course designed for first and second year students. This interactive and engaging class challenges students to examine different leadership theories and styles, to discover their own leadership style; and to gain skills that will lead to positive, effective change for their communities. Throughout the class, students will have the opportunity to work with positive change agents -- ranging from their peers to faculty and staff to local community leaders. In addition, students will also work in mentor groups and create leadership change projects that will enhance their learning and make a difference to the UK community. An application is available at http://www.uky.edu/GetInvolved/Leadership/ELI/apply.html.  You can also visit the web site to learn more about the program. Applications are due at noon on Wednesday, March 25
