III. Celebrate Spring and Japanese Culture in April
In 1912, Tokyo presented Washington D.C. with 3,000 cherry trees to honor the friendship between the United States and Japan, and that gesture is remembered during the National Cherry Blossom Festival®. Throughout the month, our campus and community will share in that same spirit thanks to the UK Asia Center, the UK Libraries and numerous local contributors. Visit the UK Asia Center Web site for details. This week’s highlights include:
- Origami: The Art of Science and Mathematics, an exhibition of work by Duk Lee, professor of mathematics at Asbury College, which is presented in three campus libraries. The show features everything from animals to geometric forms, and illustrates Lee's exploration of beauty and creativity in science. “Cranes for Peace,” a project involving the Lexington community in the creation of 1,000 paper cranes to symbolize peace, will also be part of the exhibit.
- An outdoor festival on Friday, April 3, sponsored by the Japanese Culture in Kentucky Society near the UK Student Center, 2-6 p.m. Activities include calligraphy, tea tasting, origami and martial arts. “Zen,” thetrue story of legendary 13th century Zen Master Dogen who risked his life to pioneer Zen Buddhism, will be shown at 5:30 p.m. in William T. Young Library.
IV. International Student Workshop: Working on Campus
Join other international students, as well as staff from the UK Counseling and Testing Center and the Office of International Affairs, to talk about life in the United States. This week’s session, “Working on Campus,” will focus on workplace expectations, job frustrations and keys to being successful in your position. Meet in room 207 of Bradley Hall, 2-3 p.m. on Friday, April 3.
