- All currently enrolled University of Kentucky students who plan to attend the summer and/or fall 2009 terms must register March 30 - April 21. Click here for more information.
- Applications for two UK scholarships are due today. Current undergraduate students are eligible for the Academic Scholarship (http://www.uky.edu/AcademicScholarships/current.htm) and the Diversity Scholarship (http://www.uky.edu/AcademicScholarships/WCP.htm.)
- Kaplan, in partnership with the UK Central Advising Services, is offering students at all levels the opportunity to experience a mock first-year law school class on Wednesday, April 22 at 6 p.m. at the UK College of Law. Register at www.kaptest.com/law. Once there, go to the zip code locator box, choose “LSAT”, type in your zip code and the Kentucky event should come up in the free events section at the bottom. I. Celebrating Asia
The April Celebration of Spring continues with the following Asia-themed events:
- Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival: On Saturday, April 18 Yuko-En on the Elkhorn will host a Cherry Blossom Festival, beginning at noon. Experience taiko (Japanese drums), traditional Japanese songs and dances, a Japanese tea ceremony, origami (the art of paper folding), karesansui (the dry landscape gardens), Noh theater performances, Japanese food and much more. Yuko-En on the Elkhorn is located at 700 Cincinnati Pike, adjacent to historic Cardome Centre, on Highway 25, just .7 of a mile north of the courthouse in Georgetown, Kentucky. - Samurai Film Series: The Japan Studies Program and the UK Asia Center, with funding from The Japan Foundation, have partnered with the Kentucky Theatre to host a Samurai Film Festival next week. Features range from the 1954 film “Seven Samurai" to 2007’s “Sukiyaki Western Django.” See the Kentucky Theatre’s Web site for a complete schedule. Admission is $5 per show.
- Samurai Film Talk: Michael Raine of the University of Chicago will present "The Samurai Film in Japan: From Fairground Entertainment to Postmodern Remake" at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 23 in the Niles Gallery of the UK Fine Arts Library. In this talk, Professor Raine will situate these films within the history of samurai film or, more precisely, jidaigeki. He will also discuss the significance and accomplishment of Miike's "Sukiyaki Western Django," which attendees are invited to view at the Kentucky Theatre after the presentation.
II. Block Party Highlighting Student Organizations
On Saturday, April 18 the Resident Student Association will join forces with the Black Student Union and the Student Government Association to host a block party, which will include a D.J., a live band and a step show. The party will take place in the south campus courtyard, 4-8 p.m. Student organizations are invited to bring food, set up a tables and hand out organizational information. III. International Student Graduation Reception
In honor and celebration of your accomplishments, Dr. Susan Carvalho, Assistant Provost for International Affairs; the University of Kentucky Alumni Association; the Office of International Affairs; and the International Hospitality Program cordially invite Spring and Summer graduates and their families to the International Students Graduation Reception on Thursday, May 7, 4:30-6 p.m. at King Alumni House. IV. Campus Safety Forum Tonight
Student Government hosts a Campus Safety Forum at 5 p.m. tonight in the CSI Classroom on the first level of the Student Center. UK Alert, Safe Cats, Fire Drills and other topics will be discussed. This is a great opportunity for students to come and learn about campus safety. Students will be able to ask questions and get more information from each of the departments above. Student attendees can register to win an iPod Touch.
V. International Student Workshop: Am I Stuck in this Major?
Join other international students, as well as staff from the UK Counseling and Testing Center and the Office of International Affairs, to talk about life in the United States. This week’s session, “Am I Stuck in this Major?,” will focus on using your interests to identify the field that is the best fit for you. Meet in room 207 in Bradley Hall, 2-3 p.m. on Friday, April 17.
