I. Address Requirements for F-1 and J-1 Students
All F-1 and J-1 students must log in to MyUK before Tuesday, September 1 to confirm that their current local and international addresses are correct. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services requires that every student have two accurate addresses on file:
- A current residential street address that cannot include a post office or box number and is not an office or department address.
- An international address, which does not have to be the country of origin but cannot be a U.S. address.
To complete the confirmation process, J-1 students who make any changes to their local address in the MyUK system must e-mail the new information to OIA Data Manager Ann Livingstone at livingstone@uky.edu.
II. International Conversation Night
The UK Writing Center invites all international students to make new friends and practice their English. Join them for International Conversation Night, formerly International Conversation Hour, each week. The semester’s first meeting will take place tonight at 6 p.m. on the fifth floor of the William T. Young Library.
III. Child Rights and You (CRY-UKY) Fundraising Run/Walk
Every year, the UK chapter of Child Rights and You (CRY), a registered student organization and an affiliate of CRY-America, Inc., organizes a run/walk to raise funds for projects that support underprivileged children. Join us at Coldstream Research Park at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 29. Register online at http://america.cry.org/cryevents/eventregister/cry_walk_5k_09 or between 8:30 -9:30 a.m. on the day of the event. Shuttle service will be available at Bradley Hall at 9 a.m. T-shirts and refreshments will be provided.
IV. Used Bike Sale
Pedal Power, which is located at 401 S. Upper Street, is having a used bike sale on Saturday, August 29, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Bikes and bike parts will be sold, and the proceeds will benefit Kentucky Refugee Ministries. For more information, visit www.pedalpowerbikeshop.com.
V. Fast-A-Thon 2009
The Muslim Student Association Presents Fast-A-Thon 2009 on Thursday, September 10 at 7 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the UK Student Center. Fast-A-Thon is an annual event sponsored by the University of Kentucky Muslim Student Association. Students pledge to fast for one day, abstaining from food, water and smoke from the first light of dawn until sunset, just as Muslims do each day in the month of Ramadan. This year's fast will last from 5:40 a.m. until 7:53 p.m. Students then gather to hear speakers on fasting and Ramadan, enjoy free food and get a free t-shirt. Those who participate are encouraged to donate what they would have spent on lunch to the Victim Assistance Fund of the Violence Intervention and Prevention Center (The VIP Center) on UK's campus. This money will help feed and shelter women who have fled homes of sexual violence and abuse. Sign up by joining the Facebook group, e-mailing ukymsa@gmail.com or stopping by the Student Center September 8-9, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Visit the Muslim Student Association’s Web site to view photos of last year’s event.
VI. Badminton and Basketball
The International Student Council coordinates badminton and basketball games on Friday evenings at 5 p.m. at the UK Seaton Center, beginning on Friday, August 28. Contact Albert at akali2@email.uky.edu for more information.
