Reminders
- New international students must complete their TB screening by Friday, October 2. To make an appointment for a TB skin test, call the University Health Service at 323-2778.
- International Conversation Night takes place tonight at 6 p.m. in the UK Writing Center on the fifth floor of the William T. Young Library.
- Fast-A-Thon 2009 is tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the UK Student Center. Sign up by joining the Facebook group, e-mailing ukymsa@gmail.com.
I. Health Insurance Waiver Deadlines
Health insurance is mandatory for all international students at the University of Kentucky. International students who already have insurance that meets UK’s minimum insurance requirements should apply for a waiver before Tuesday, September 22 to remove themselves from the Aetna Student Health Insurance Plan. The minimum requirements and instructions for completing the waiver are available at http://www.uky.edu/IntlAffairs/students_scholars/health_insurance_student.html . Students with questions about this process should contact Karen Slaymaker at karen.slaymaker@uky.edu.
II. Cross-Cultural Workshop in Eastern Kentucky
The OIA Cross-Cultural Workshop is an interactive experience that connects international and American students. This semester, the workshop will be held in eastern Kentucky October 24-25. Participants will spend the night in Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park, located along the edge of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Students will have an opportunity to discuss cultural issues, learn from each other and make new friends. There is a $25 participation fee, which includes lodging, transportation and several meals. Space is limited, and applications are due by Wednesday, October 14. Click here to download a registration form.
III. International Night 2009
The International Student Council is hosting International Night 2009 on Saturday, September 12, 6-8:30 p.m. in the Engineering Courtyard. Experience a variety of cultures through food, dance and music. Admission is free.
IV. International Student Workshop: Adjusting to U.S. Culture
Join other international students, as well as staff from the UK Counseling and Testing Center and the Office of International Affairs, to talk about life in the United States. This week’s session, “Adjusting to U.S. Culture” will focus on social customs and values to help you understand more about U.S. culture. Meet in room 207 in Bradley Hall, 1-2 p.m. on Friday, September 11.
V. TaxiCats Offers Discounted Rides for Students
The TaxiCats program allows UK students with valid student IDs to ride within the boundaries of Chevy Chase, Broadway, Greg Page Apartments and Main Street for just $2 per person per ride. Additionally, All American Taxi offers a year-round 15% discount on taxi service outside these boundaries. All American Taxi (859-381-TAXI) accepts UK PLUS accounts, and has an average wait time of 15 to 20 minutes. For more information, go to www.uky.edu/Parking/transportation-taxicats.html.
