Reminders
- Students and scholars will have an opportunity to meet the university insurance coordinators for the Aetna Student Health Insurance Plan during an information session today at 10 a.m. in room 130 in the University Health Service Building. NOTE: Those who already have insurance meeting UK’s minimum insurance requirements should apply for a waiver of the Aetna Student Health Insurance Plan before Tuesday, September 22. Instructions are available at http://www.uky.edu/IntlAffairs/students_scholars/health_insurance_student.html.
- New international students must complete their TB screening by Friday, October 2. To make an appointment for a TB skin test, call the University Health Service at 323-2778.
- International Conversation Night takes place tonight at 6 p.m. in the UK Writing Center on the fifth floor of the William T. Young Library.
- The OIA Cross-Cultural Workshop in eastern Kentucky will take place October 24-25. Space is limited, and applications are due by Wednesday, October 14. Download a registration form or read more about this opportunity on the OIA Web site.
I. Students Taking Action Globally
Students Taking Action Globally (STAG) is a global community outreach group that volunteers with local organization that are globally minded, plans and promotes advocacy campaigns to inform UK students about important global issues, and organizes fundraising events to raise money and educate for global organizations. Anyone interested in getting involved should attend a meeting tonight at 7 p.m. in the Young Library auditorium. The conversation will focus on plans for Hunger Week, and representatives from local organizations will be present to discuss volunteer opportunities.
II. Graduate Student Congress
Graduate Student Congress is seeking students who are interested in serving on the Graduate Council. The council meets every other Thursday. The next meeting is Thursday, September 17, 1-3 p.m. in the Gillis Building. If you are interested in serving, contact Angela Schoergendorfer
III. Preparing an Application for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship
All graduate students should learn how to apply for external funding. Attend “Preparing an Application for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship,” a workshop of tips on putting together a competitive application for the NSF predoctoral fellowship program, presented by Joe McGillis, Ph.D. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to attend this session on Thursday, September 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the Commons Room of the Wethington Health Sciences Building. No pre-registration required.
IV. Pre-Med Information Sessions
Central Advising Service and Transfer Center are hosting fall meetings for Pre-med, Pre-dentistry and Pre-optometry students on Tuesday, September 29. New students or those who have recently developed a pre-professional interest can attend an introductory meeting at 4-5 p.m. in CB 106. A general meeting will be held between 4-5 p.m. in CB 110 for students who plan on applying to professional school in 2010. Students will have another opportunity to attend these meetings in October.
V. International Student Workshop: I Don’t Understand the Slang
Join other international students, as well as staff from the UK Counseling and Testing Center and the Office of International Affairs, to talk about life in the United States. This week’s session, “Help! I Don’t Understand the Slang.” will focus on common expressions and idioms used by Americans. Meet in room 207 in Bradley Hall, 1-2 p.m. on Friday, September 18.
VI. “Abduction: The Megumi Yokota Story”
“Abduction: The Megumi Yokota Story” documents the remarkable story of a 13-year-old Japanese girl kidnapped on her way home from school by North Korean spies in 1977. For 20 years, her parents had no idea what had happened to her or if she was even alive. Then the whole world learned the shocking truth. See this Japanese film with English subtitles on Tuesday, September 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Young Library auditorium. This event is free and open to the public.
VII. Join the Indian Student Association
The Indian Student Association (ISA) invites all Indian students to offer suggestions for creating new events, improving existing events and creating transparency between the committee and its members. Those who are interested are encouraged to attend a meeting on Friday, September 18 at RGAN Commons, in the Ralph G. Anderson Building at 5:50 p.m. (Regular meetings will be held on the first Friday of every month thereafter.) ISA is also looking for event volunteers. New students are especially encouraged to attend, meet new people and get involved.
