I. UHS Offers Flu Shots

University Health Service is offering flu shots to students for $10 Monday, September 28 – Monday, October 5 around campus. Visit their Web pages for times and locations.

  

II. International Medical Student Shares Experiences

International Student Nirmal Ravi, M.D./Ph.D. will be talking about his experiences in Ghana with the Carter Center and the Guinea Worm Eradication Program on Monday, September 28. Ravi is a biomedical engineering graduate student. The presentation will take place in the College of Medicine Learning Center basement (on Leader Avenue,) noon-1 p.m.

 

III. International Student Workshop: What About Dependents?

Join other international students, as well as staff from the UK Counseling and Testing Center and the Office of International Affairs, to talk about life in the United States. This week’s session, “What about dependents? What can my spouse do?” will focus on opportunities that are available for dependents. This session is open to spouses. Meet in room 207 in Bradley Hall, 1-2 p.m. on Friday, September 25. Visit the OIA Web site for a complete list of this semester’s workshop topics.

 

IV. Free Admission on Smithsonian Museum Day

The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) history campus and other Lexington museums will offer free admission to the public on Smithsonian Museum Day, Saturday, September 26. Museum Day is a one-day nationwide event where participating museums and cultural institutions across the country offer free admission.  Go to the Smithsonian Magazine’s Web site at www.smithsonianmagazine.com/museumday to download a Museum Day admission card and search for a list of museums that are participating.


V. International Peace Scholarship from P.E.O.

The P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship (IPS) Fund was established in 1949 to provide scholarships for international women students to pursue graduate study in the United States and Canada. Visit the P.E.O. Sisterhood Web Site for details on requesting an application. Completed applications must be returned by December 15



VI. The MLKCC is Looking for Students

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Cultural Center (MLKCC) is looking for students to participate in an upcoming advertising campaign. Whether you’re an  international student, someone who can represent the Appalachian, African-American, Latino, Asian, African or LGBQT community or just consider yourself “the average UK student” stop by for a professional photograph beginning Thursday, October 1 from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the MLKCC (Room 133 in the UK Student Center). Don’t dress to impress. Just be yourself and become one of the faces of the MLKCC. And remember that all students are invited to the MLKCC to study, use their computers, meet other students and participate in daily cultural programming.

 

VII. Emerging Leader Institute

The Office of Student Involvement is once again offering the Emerging Leader Institute (ELI) for the spring 2010 semester. ELI is a three-credit hour graded leadership development course designed for first and second year students.  This interactive and engaging class challenges students to examine different leadership theories and styles, to discover their own leadership style, and to gain skills that will lead to positive, effective change for their communities.  Throughout the class, students will have the opportunity to work with positive change agents- ranging from their peers to faculty and staff to even local community leaders.  In addition, students will have the opportunity to work in mentor groups and create leadership change projects that will enhance their learning and make a difference to the UK community. VIII. Kentucky Theatre Offers Global Film Fare

Filmgoers in Lexington Kentucky will unite with audiences in 172 additional cities across five continents to view and judge the next generation of filmmakers when the 12th Annual MANHATTAN SHORT Film Festival screens at The Kentucky Theatre  on Wednesday and Thursday, September 23-24, at 7 p.m. This year the festival received 428 entries from 36 countries around the world from which 10 short films – all 14 minutes and under in length – were selected. Countries represented this year include the USA, Australia, Mozambique, UK, Israel, Spain, France, Sweden and Italy. The audience will vote on their favorites. Details are available at www.ManhattanShort.com In addition, Several award-winning narrative, feature films from Argentina, Brazil, China, Ecuador, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Morocco and Mozambique will headline the Global Lens 2009 film series at the Kentucky Theatre Friday-Monday, October 2-4.
