LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 23, 2008) − The Office of International Affairs (OIA) at the University of Kentucky awarded $80,500 in scholarships for the fall and summer sessions. Seventy-four UK students received the Education Abroad at UK Scholarship, and 20 students received the International Student Tuition Scholarship. The Viji Jeganathan Scholarship for Cross-Cultural Understanding was also presented.
The Education Abroad at UK Scholarship was created to supplement the financial resources of domestic students who wish to study in other countries. Those awards totaled nearly $60,000. OIA International Student Tuition Scholarships were presented to 20 outstanding international students to help with their tuition expenses.
The Viji Jeganathan Scholarship for Cross-Cultural Understanding, which is named for an extraordinary UK international student, went to Nirmal Ravi of Kerala, India. The award honors an individual who demonstrates leadership and ability in bridging cultural differences and who by example promotes communication among students of diverse nationalities at UK or in the Lexington Community. Ravi is an M.D./Ph.D. student working toward a doctorate in biomedical engineering. In addition to this award, he created a video about his experience as an Indian student attending UK that recently won a national video contest sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce in collaboration with the U.S. Electronic Education Fairs for China and India.
The Office of International Affairs encourages the internationalization of the campus, curriculum and community at the University of Kentucky. OIA facilitates international activities both on and off campus -- providing leadership, coordination and service. UK has welcomed international students for more than seven decades, and OIA offers guidance and support to hundreds of international students, staff, faculty and scholars each year. The office also advises U.S. students and other members of the campus community who study, work, teach and travel abroad.
