DEPENDENTS (J-2)
The dependents of J-1 Exchange Visitors are referred to as J-2 dependents. They are permitted to apply to USCIS for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) in order to be employed in the United States as long as it is not for the purpose of supporting the J-1. It usually takes 3 months for the EAD to be processed, and employment may begin only after the EAD is received and Social Security Number is obtained. The J-2 employment authorization may not exceed the program duration of the J-1 as indicated on the DS-2019. In addition, the J-2 employment authorization is valid only if the J-1 is maintaining status. The filing fee for the EAD paid by the applicant.
There is a partial tuition waiver scholarship for J-2/F-2 dependents offered by the Office of International Affairs for the Semi-Intensive ESL evening class. Click here to download an application form.
