Orientation offers numerous information sessions, tours, shopping, and evening social events to help you learn your way and make friends in a new place. Senior students and staff will help with housing, opening a bank account, making an appointment at the University Health Service, health insurance, immigration matters, and e-mail. For a strong start, we encourage you to participate in these programs. Previous students report that Welcome and Orientation Week is invaluable.
Report to Office of International Affairs, Bradley Hall (See campus map) starting August 8(Teaching Assistants), or August 13 (all other students). Bring your passport, immigration papers, letter of admission, and $15.00 orientation fee. You will receive a Welcome and Orientation Week Schedule of Events, (keep it for reference all semester), a campus map, and any assistance you need. The office is a required stop before you can register for classes, but more than that, it is a "home base" for information and friends.
Placement tests in English and Mathematics - The English Placement Test is mandatory for transfer students who have taken college level English composition courses in their home countries and are seeking to test out of all or a portion of the University Writing Requirement. The Math Test is mandatory for all freshmen and transfer students without an ACT or SAT test score, who plan to enroll in beginning math or calculus courses at UK.
International Student Orientation, a required program, will cover vital topics to your stay in the U.S. such as personal safety issues, legal matters, and cultural adjustment issues. Graduate students will be introduced to officials from the Graduate School. Undergraduate students will have the opportunity to discuss academic concerns and expectations with students, faculty, and staff.
Kentucky Welcome, sponsored by the Dean of Students, for all new students. This program will introduce you to American students.
Registration for classes - Undergraduates will attend the Advising Conference. (A $25 materials fee is charged to your student account.) Here students meet in groups with an Academic Advisor to select their courses and then register. Graduates will visit the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) in their department to plan a course of study before registering. All students will have a student identification (ID) card made (no fee) in the Student Center, and pay tuition in Student Billing Services, Funkhouser Building.
